Transit of Venus 6/6/2012

Postby tasadam » Thu 07 Jun, 2012 2:43 pm

G'day.
Did anyone have a geek at the transit of Venus yesterday? Where Venus passed between the sun and earth. Any photos?
I had a play and got a photo...

It's been used by Australian Geographic too.

Yes, sunspots. Googling venus transit images, they've nearly all got it.
Found a really cool image of it HERE and HERE.

Cool shot but hows this one ! (edit: aha, I see the photo credit is NASA, thought it was pretty rad)

I'd like to know how you did it. I guess you used the mother of all ND filters & a fairly long lens?

Yes, Campbell Town being historically linked to the Transit of Venus had a great set up with lots to see and do. As far as photos go my attempts were very poor :( but I didn't have any suitable equipment (took some photos through some viewing glasses!!).

Yes, they have all the good toys don't they!

I took it using a Nikon D200 and a very average zoom lens – the Nikon 70-300 f4 – 5.6 G lens, holding a neutral density filter and 3 polarising filters over the front of the lens, so I could cut out enough light to capture the detail.
The camera was set to 1/8000 second shutter speed and f45.
Still too bright to look at the sun through it, but it allowed me to squint a lot just to get the centre of the frame pointing at the sun so AF would lock on. I tried manual focus and took several shots when I saw the eyepiece illuminate, but MF wasn’t sharp enough.

Doogs, did you see Shevill Mathers in Campbell Town? He's a friend of mine.

I got a look via a friend at the ABC that set up a telescope, the previous night I saw a partial eclipse on the West Coast of Tassie after that morning seeing this MOONSET!! A very celestial couple of days

I did meet a couple of folk who looked similar but I had my kids with me so didn't stop to chat to anyone for long. It was at the showgrounds less than a week after the Campbell Town show. The air was filled with the scent of sausage sizzle and sheep urine. What an overriding memory of The Transit of Venus to have!!!!

Must have been nice to have enough clear sky to actually see the thing.

A litle bit late, but this image was produced using a pinhole mirror, projected onto a piece of paper and photographed using an iPhone.

As you can see, the quality is very similar to Adam's photo :P

Well, the patrons at the cafe where this was done were kept highly entertained by the process for some hours.
