My partner and I saw a fox on a back road around Longford in April 2004.
We were touring the state at the time, a year before we made the move down. We had just spent 3 days
on the Freycinet peninsula and were now enjoying the comforts of Woolmers Estate. A great place to use
as a base for day trips. Returning to Woolmers late in the afternoon from a day of sightseeing we see a fox
standing by the side of the road. As we drove closer it moved down into a culvert. We drove past saying to
each other quite matter-of-factly, Ah fox.
I wasn't until after we had moved down here did we find out that foxes were not supposed to be here, and
that our sighting was rather rare.
I grew up in country Victoria and know a fox when I see one. I've hunted foxes too.
In 2008 I met dog trainer Steve Austin, who was contracted by the Tas government to use his spaniels in the
hunt for the fox. I mentioned my sighting and he said that that area around Longford was a known hotspot for
fox activity. Steve is also contracted to the Macquarie Island pest eradication programme.
I don't know if any foxes are here now or how many, but in April 2004 there was 1 fox in the Longford area.
But in all my travels I've counted more feral cats and dogs than foxes.
