Brazen theives target Kathmandu stores in NZ

Thu 17 Oct, 2013 2:55 pm

The spate of thefts began in June with four robberies at the Ronwood Ave Kathmandu store.

Since then, the two other stores in Botany and Pukekohe had also been targeted.

The Ronwood Ave store suffered 15 robberies between June and September, Ms Hunt said.

Most recently, the Ronwood Ave store was robbed of thousands of dollars worth of jackets on Saturday.

Stores across the Auckland metro region had also been targeted

What are they going to do with all the Kathmandu labelled goods? It's not Nike or North Face with thousands of knock offs, it'll be easily noted out there. Not smart.

Yes, I'd suspect both Kathmandu and the police will be keeping a close eye on those sites. It's not easy to not get noticed in a population of 4.4M.

maybe sell them at various markets in small batches, move on before anyone catches up... in places like south auckland a lot of ethnic people won't realise stolen stuff when they see it, being caught.
or maybe they just arent smart enough in the end to sell it
a few years back a ram raid on a central auckland store completely cleared out the whole shop....
down jackets are a fashion item year round now

In the most recent case, police were working to establish the identity of an alleged offender who entered the store wearing pyjamas or a 'onesie', and dropped a wallet in his rush to leave the store with an armful of jackets.

To be fair, if this was based on non-sale prices, its probably only a couple of jackets.

thats ridiculous, get off the grass mate, it would be at least three jackets....

its the natural progression...first you give people 25% off, then they get 50% off, then eventually 70% off doesn't feel like enough...
but seriously, Macpac stores in Auckland especially were liberated of so many down jackets over the last few years it is amazing...and they say the crims all ended up in Australia eh?

Where are all those electronic tags and associated security measures? Yet again, the number of times I've seen shop assistants ignoring the alarm, what's the point? Aren't they even trained to action?

I'm pretty sure store staff are not allowed to detain shoplifters?

yes well bivouac locking up their down jackets on a cable would point to the ineffectiveness of staff and tags being able to stop shoplifters... but you winder if its lost them sales, shops busy, you cant be bothered waiting for a staff member to unlock the jackets so you can try one on. question is are they averting more jackets being stolen than lost sales...

Can't detain but can ask to inspect. Most of the time, they look up and then look elsewhere, even if they have nothing else to do.

Yes but if they run then there is nothing staff can do.

Still, hardly the right attitude.

it would all change if the anti theft alarms gave out a massive electric shock as they left the shop....
