You might have seen something like this before - it's more or less to scale. That little red line at the end of the top part is "Quaternary". You'll have to click on the picture and zoom in to see it. The Quaternary is 2.5 million years long, but modern human are only in the last 200,000 years and recorded history the last 3% of modern human existence.

So, yes!.. basically we arrived in the lasthour - at the last minute, and trashed the place.

Yes, the earth is not quite half way through its life. It has another 5000 million years (or more) before its consumed in the sun's as it become a red giant. Humans on the other hand are probably much closer to the end of their reign. And yes Miyata610, we'll have taken so much with us by the time we're done.

If your belief system is evidence based, then you'll know that's not too much of a problem unless we find a way to destroy the fundamental underpinnings of life on the planet. Never know, it might not happen. It was looking almost certain that we'd reach mutually assured destruction in the 80s but we eventually wised up. Still, that was political, and not needs-based so I guess once we start running out of resources if we haven't found some solutions we'll probably end up at the brink again sooner rather than later.
