Lifeline Walks Next Week

Postby TerraMer » Thu 05 Sep, 2013 11:16 am

Each year Lifeline hold an event called Out of the Shadows. It is a short walk for suicide awareness held in towns and cities all over Australia. Some are at sunrise, some at sunset, others can be anytime during the day and some will be on the weekend instead of World Suicide Prevention Day Tuesday 10th September.

You can use this link to search for a walk near you

The walk is for everyone. I organised one in Port Macquarie a couple of years ago and people joined me who had attempted suicide, were caring for family who were suicidal, bereaving the suicide of a friend or family member and a few who just wanted to know more about how they can help prevent suicide. I will be trying to attending the one in Byron Bay this year.

Out of the Shadows is also a great way to help break the stigma attached to mental health and the taboo attached to conversations about suicide. The more we talk about mental health and suicide prevention the more people will feel comfortable about talking about their own struggles and suicidal thoughts. The more people who reach out for help means more lives will be saved.

So, check out the Lifeline link and go for a walk :)
