Ok, this is a seriously long shot. I'm hoping somebody might have info/ideas from outside the box, for an item of significant sentimental value.

In a week or two, I'm hoping to get a small leather 2 seater lounge (with a high back) from the Woy Woy/Gosford area to Melbourne or even Devonport. The roof racks on the subaru is not ideal (!) - though should be OK from Melb to the boat. I have the extra height booked on my return ticket to allow for that.

I've looked at some backloading options that got me stumped in the end - the very specific time frame is tricky. The one most likely to be workable was still going to cost megabucks.

I'm considering asking a cabinet maker family member to see if he can take the back off in such a way that it could be 'fixed' when i get it home, but that's getting a bit drastic.

Like i said, it's a very long shot, but if i don't ask, there might just be something I miss.

Um yes, that was the first option, but couldn't book mine on the boat at the right times. I didn't look into a one-way hire, though. Shall start googling.

Being serious now, have you requested a quote from any removalist companies? If consolidated with another consignment the cost might be quite reasonable.

Thanks, Bluegum Mic. That's very kind. I reckon i'll be right your end, though. Hopefully some friends in Melbourne will be up for some weight lifting.

I got totally bamboozled by a couple of websites where you have to put in for tenders so there was no way of knowing what the cost might be, or when it could be done. My head is just about done in with other stuff, so that just got too confusing. Two removal companies i spoke to either couldn't help, or were going to charge >$1000.

One way trailer hire is also obscenely expensive, as I found out when shifting down here - although a small box trailer would be cheaper than the enclosed furniture trailer I hired. Aren't really any other practical options though, apart from finding someone with a suitable vehicle who's going down to carry it for you, which is unlikely.

Have you tried getting quotes from a couple of local companies like Marshalls.

What specific dates ?
I "May" be able to loan you the ute for a week-end or so but that may mean you paying the insurance premium if not a rating 1 driver
Otherwise hire a ute from Budget rent a car from Melbourne to Woy Woy and back

Trailers can be horrendously expensive on the boat as they are classed as freight.....unless they are "camper trailers" and even then its not cheap. Better a ute stacked up as a single vehicle.

that's incredibly generous of you to think of that, moondog. I've just brought my car over to melb. Actually got a decent quote for a one way trailer to melb. Back to plan b with it upside down on my roof racks but only on and off the boat. . Hopefully a couple of strong friends can help with that! The huge added expense of the trailer on the boat was a problem as well as timing.

But I might yet get an ok quote with one of the local companies if I can add it to a load.

As I mentioned to you back then, a trailer turned up where I was staying. A last minute hiccup put a spanner in the works, but an even better solution turned up. It's quite tricky if one wants to tow a legitimately unregistered small Victorian box trailer into NSW, with a Tasmanian-registered car.

Bingo! Thank you once more, 1iron. I'd only tried mainland companies for some unknown reason. Express Removals at Spreyton did the trick, for less than 20% of the cost of my other quotes, and close to a third of another Tassie quote I got. And less than the one-way trailer hire I was prepared to accept to Melbourne, which would have had some significant inconveniences.

The said couch is now happily ensconced in my friend's lounge room, awaiting my return. Thanks, one and all.
