Gilligans island

On Gilligans island why would a millionaire and his wife plus a movie star go on a three hour cruise on a boat thats seen better days ? When they can clearly afford a cruise ship and if the skippers boat is so expensive how does a professor and country girl ( mary ann ) pay for this ? .Is the professor selling secrets to russia and mary ann making cookies with herbal fillings . It just dont add up .

If Mrs Howell was only going on a three hour cruise how come she had so many clothes?
Why could they make huts out of palm leaves, a bike out of bamboo and a nuclear reactor out of a coconut but they couldn't fix a three foot hole in a boat???
