Am I about to lose my Yahoo email account?

Help!

I use an ancient yahoo email account, because technological change usually sends me into a confused tailspin. It's in the form xxxxx@yahoo.com.au
And I haven't linked that to my mobile phone number as they keep asking me to do, because..., well.., let's just say I don't want to at this stage.

I've received 'an important message from Yahoo':
It looks as though you haven't signed in to X*********NUMBERNUMBER for quite a while.
Please sign in to your account on Yahoo within the next 30 days if you'd like to keep your account active.

I have no idea what account that is, or if it's my actual email account. I go into Help, where I'm told I can get help via email, chat rooms, etc, etc, but I cannot for the life of me find anywhere I can do that. Failing that, I can get 'community help'. However, to do that, I have to sign in to some unknown account or other. I'm really keen to keep this email address, as I'm so unorganised that it'd take me a month to work out who I have to notify to change this email address. Actually, at the moment it just wouldn't be possible at all. I don't do groups. I just deal with emails as they come in.

Does anybody here know which end is up with this? Thanks for any thoughts, and please have mercy on this Bear of Very Little Brain.

Tortoise, have you forgotten your log in details for this email?

I just had a quick look and it asks for you to enter your email and then follow the prompts, once you have logged in you should be ok from what I can see, I'm not a tech guru though!!

I just looked up yahoo and looked at the mail icon in the top right. I clicked on it and it asked for my email address, it then says follow the prompts.

This would be to log in and I think that is what it's asking you to do.

Where did the message come from ?

Sounds like spam / scam to capture your login details. There are a lot of variations of this, but similar are being sent to hotmail and gmail users.

Many freebie accounts do expire due to prolonged inactivity but I have never received any warning for pending expiry. Reading OP's story, I too have suspicion that it's a spam. This would be a first order verification step.

I agree with the above comments Tortoise, that's why I directed you to re-log back into your email from Yahoo. This would just ensure that your account is recorded as being active and should require nothing further from you. Asking for phone numbers or other information is purely a phishing protocol and should never be done unless you are comfortable with the request.

Hope you got it sorted :)
