Been reading in the SMH that Google is threatening to remove their search engine from Australia due Gov planning to force them to pay media companies when they display extracts from articles and link back to the media company.

https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal ... 56w2h.html

In the comments a number of people were talking about the https://www.ecosia.org/ search engine. It's a social enterprise that uses its revenue to plant trees. They fund the tree planting by users clicking on ads (which are unobtrusive) and also just using the search engine helps as the more people using it the more advertiser's pay to display ads.

They claim to have planted 118 million trees so far

Seems like a reasonable concept and they have good privacy as well.

Anyone else know of similar digital services or social media / maps that help good causes?

I'm more than willing to ditch Google.. even Google maps has become a ad fest.

I took a look, but would need to spend the next three days reading more about it and trying to evaluate it. Despite a contempt for Gargle's invasiveness and propoganda, I don't know whether I want to spend that amount of time. Is it worth it?

+1 for duckduckgo
I've replaced spyware Chrome with Brave as a browser as well. Brave https://brave.com/has Ad and tracking blockers build in and private and Tor browsing at the click of a menu item.

A recent report about Duckduckgo

Gargle is a good alternative name and fits with Faceboot.

In Window 10 I've got Adblock+ (free) and settings with no cookies can be loaded. If I get really keen I use Sandbox.
