Guitar addicts ?

Postby Charlievee » Mon 27 Sep, 2010 4:19 pm

Hey team. Any guitar addicts or tragics out there ? I've played since I was 12 yrs old (now 48) and play live semi professionally. I'm guilty of a large collection of expensive"stringed bling", but I takem' out and show em' off at gigs. I'm playing at the Great Deni ute muster this weekend. Just wondering ; any other pickers out there ? Regards, CV

Ive played the same handful of riffs since school charlie... did try for a while but id just get distracted and could never get changes etc so id just eventually pick up another few moves and that was that... I always envy those with natural talent at such things...

Hey Phil - the world needs more good bass guitarists. Everybody wants to fly, nobody wants to support. Good bass is an art unto itself.
Nuts, it's the same with every skill : application. Lotsa good guys out there - some with unreal natural talent. Others are like me ; we have to work hard to get ahead. All part of life's journey, I guess. Boy - who used to be a hippy eh ? Heehee. Regards, CV.

Yeah, but I want to 'fly' too as you call it.....that's why I'm lead vocal on the bass!! Still get to be the front man!!

I have a charango, does that count? I can play a few things on it but not much and am a bit out of practice now.
The main instruments I play are quena and zampona. I got interested in this in the 70s but could not find any info at the time. With the net, I learned to make my own Andean flutes and have enjoyed them (over 20 years) ever since. I used to sell these flutes for a while too but free time is too precious for that now. I have done a few solo public performances but not professionally and sometimes parts in church. I have a collection of Andean music both tablature and sheet, much of it produced by Raymond Thevenot for quena parts. My instruments are standard pitch so not limited to the Andean theme. Zampona sounds great in jewish style music and the quena fits Celtic folk really well. The PVC quena comes along on overnight walks sometimes.

Regards,
Ken

Im not an addict...but I sit here wtih two electrics hanging on the wall beside me, my little valve amp beside me, and that doesnt incl the 4x12 stack in garage and 2 more electrics. Im self taught hack though. no real skill. I generally play accoustic now when I've had too much to drink. Have dragged the accoustic to two of the forum meetups now...the most memorable being the Scott Kilvert trek with the fullsize guitar inside my pack. That was a corker evening with the whole hut bouncing to 500 miles by Proclaimers

What sort of gats you got? My main are
Electric: Dean Gold top Les Paul style
Acoustic: Cort Earth 100QB (QB is quilted bubinga back and sides. Solid spruce top. Very sexy looking gat)

The rest are a hodge podge of stuff ive picked up over years.

The Cort is at luthier as we speak getting setup, tidy up. action was a bit high for me before. Dave Dobson who it is with is very well respected luthier. http://www.dobsonguitars.com.au/

I play fingerstyle guitar, wouldn't call myself an addict though. I go through phases of learning songs and then neglecting my guitar for months.
Enjoy folky, travis picking stuff. Tallest Man on Earth is amazing.
Planning to practice a few covers with my sister. Iron and Wine, Angus and Julia stone sort of music.

haha sailfish I had to google all your instruments! afraid i haven't heard much of any of those..

I'm still an amateur, but I love my guitars. I have a Tanglewood SG electric and a Greg Bennett Signature acoustic. I'm a bit of a singer as well. I'm a folky at heart, but I listen to anything. Biggest influences are Paul Kelly, Bob Dylan, Conor Oberst.

I like your taste. I love Angus and Julia, Yellow Brick Road has the most awesome room for solos :D

Angus and Julia Stone are fantastic. Saw them play here in Launceston a month or so ago - got in for free actually  As the saying goes; It's not what you know but who you know. My cousin tours with Angus and Julia and is about to head off to Europe and then North America with them in the coming months. He does their 'monitors' - or foldback as most of us would probably refer to it as. After Christmas he then has the Falls Festival and Big Day Out tours.......not a bad job I reckon!!

Yeah definately. I missed seeing them in Hobart when they were here, but I did get a free ticket to see John Butler Trio 2 nights later. I'm not really into the whole festival thing anymore. Too many people go there to get drunk, not to enjoy the music.

Great stuff guys ! Glad to know I'm not the only tragic !!! Muster went off big time. Lotsa "walking wounded" if you know what I mean. Too much party. I couldn't get over the amount of sunburned folks I saw. Sad, considering how much melanoma there is around. I guess long sleeves cover up their tatts ! Still, it was a lot of fun, but many hours behind the wheel; Got on the road at 5:45 am - got to Muster about 10:30 - 11:00, onstage for about 35 mins (so as not to clash with AFL Grand final), then after a water or two, back in the car again, arriving in Croydon about 5:30 pm. Don't want to do that every day. Today I'm off to the Music trade show at the Exhibition centre, Southbank. And, tomorrow I'm cutting the last couple solos for a buddy's album. Busy weekend ! No wonder we look forward to the bush to recharge ! Regards, CV
