Looks like a good forum, I'm about to move over from the UK to TAS in the next few months. Cant wait to get stuck into the local trails.
I am in the market for a hard wearing no nonsense WP jacket, I'm of the opinion that Goretex is probabely the best bet. I have always stuck with Lowealpine but they have not made any cloths for the past 2 years so I guess I'll need to move on. I have a Macpac pack and am very pleased with it but the reviews I've read on here have put me off their jackets. Mayeb they should stick with pacs.
I guess my specs would less than 750g with long life construction
Any recommendations or ones to avoid please?

What about Mont?
Australian company with old school heavy/durable gore jackets ...
I have had a pair of mont pants since 2004 and they are still going strong. At least 150 days use, lots of skiing ... They dont bead much anymore but still work well enough

Thanks, I havnt heard of this brand until now, checked out some of their gear, looks like the kind of no nonsense stuff I like and the kind of no nonsense gear I'd expect from an Aussie company
I'll defiantly be looking at their products when I get over to Tas.
The problem with most modern gear is that it isn't built to last, how hard can it be?

Are you still in the UK? If so, you might care to check out Daleswear's own-brand 'Full Zipped Cagoule'. (See http://www.daleswear.co.uk)
That is a traditional full-length 3-layer waterproof (*) walking jacket which is built to last, and will handle the Tassie scrub. It is no nonsense gear - from a no nonsense Yorkshire company!
(* It is not made from Goretex. It is made from some other breathable fabric - Daleswear's own I think - but it works fine.)

Definitely try the Mont jackets (the Austral).
My wife has the Siena and at the weekend she was the only one of our group dry inside her rain jacket during some *&%$#! weather in the Blue Mountains.
They're a little heavier than many jackets but if staying dry is the pay off then it appears to be worth it.

My partner owns a Mont Tempest and is very pleased with it, and consequently I am now also (as of about 15 minutes ago) the proud owner of my very own Tempest! My dad's also had a Mont, Maverick I believe, for quite a while now, and he's very pleased with it!
