Maps online ?? Equipment

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Maps online ?? Equipment

Can anyone direct me to an online source of maps for Oz? I was fluffing around producing the "ultimate map of Mt Bogong" for skiing next weekend - it involved joining 2 map sheets, and then photocopying them x times to get what I wanted. V time consuming.

Years ago I bought mapping CDs for the South Island of NZ -about $150. I can search any part of the Sth island and print it at whim. Is a similar facility available for Vic/NSW/Oz??

www.melbmap.com.au

If you have an iPhone, you can get the Mud-Maps app and then buy topo maps from their website, which you can then download to the iPhone.

If your running Windows, Garmin Basecamp is a free download. Then you can download and install various free Garmin maps like :-

Contours Australia
ShonkyMaps
Tracks4Australia
Open Street Maps Australia

Need to experiment with that though as quality can be a bit patchy. I find sometimes that just a screen print from Google Earth can give you a reasonable map if the walk is not too complicated.

All NZ is now available for free from here - http://www.linz.govt.nz/topography

Not so lucky in Oz

NSW has an online map if you just want to print small areas - https://six.nsw.gov.au/wps/portal and click on the VIEW tab
Likewise Tasmania with the LIST system - http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/listmapstart.jsp

Not sure with VIC

You can also make your own with a little computer know-how.
