So I am part of a crew (14-18 people) doing the OLT in September and trying to work out the best light weight stove system ... people are saying the Jetboil Sumo is a great device ... what say you learned people?

I have the Jetboil Sumo and haven't had any issues with it. I like the size for melting snow but only really use it for one person in the backcountry most of the time and the occasional 2 person trip.

You'll be busy boiling for 14-18 people. :)

A proposed group of 14-18 people doing the Overland Track is of much greater concern than which stove you take!

No official limit in September but a group of this size is certainly frowned upon. PWS recommended maximum group size is 6 from memory.

I t depends to some extent on whether the stove in question is expected to do all the cooking for the whole group. Surely a number of small stoves would be a better solution overall?

School groups, Scout groups, Duke of Ed etc..... Done a million times.
Three groups of 6.

Thanks guys we are in essence 4 x families ... 3 people each ... I know that is pushing the friendship with the PWS... but hey this is my crew..as Dads and lads we did Kokoda last year and OLT with the ladies this year ...so the idea would be a Sumo per 3-4 people ... would that work do u think.... also Anh advice on the OLT in late Sept would be welcomed

It should be fine provided you get your routine down each day. I usually boil up at night for the following days water requirements but if you have access to clean water and or purification methods then that should reduce your fuel amounts.
Figuring out your fuel amounts is the key. I can't give any reasonable estimate because my usage varies drastically due to snow melting etc.

Hi Fozzie
Reasonable fuel use is 30 gms gas per person per day,
or 60mls white spirit/shellite,
Less if just freeze dry food,
much more (and I would recommend the dreaded MSR, with practice first) if you plan to melt snow.
A combination of liquid and gas stoves can be good in a group.

If you're buying it pre-made get it from Strive Foods. They're dehydrated and are the best tasting meals I have ever had while out hiking. Many people here will attest to them being good.

I'd choose any time other than late Sept. The last couple of weeks can be busy, especially with large groups hoping to save some expense. P&W not so much the concern (eg. they aren't here in this convo..) but the experience for everyone else can be. Early Sept an option?

September can bring a mixed weather bag relative to other months; wet, cold and windy, good rain gear and comfortable tents?

As for the group cooking, a big stainless stock pot or two? (two of everything better than one). A couple of remote canister style stoves? (something sturdy, not the UL Bulin/Fire Maple designs). If breaking it down to 3/4 person groups most any b'walking stove would cut it.

No personal experience with Jetboil.

Hmm...Jetboil Sumo between 3 to 4 people? It's definitely doable if they're patient enough to wait for their food. Or will that be 1 Sumo per 3/4 people?

I like it. Even got the pan accessory from Mountain Designs outlet in Birkenhead Point (NSW) on special a couple of months back for $30.

Dehydrated meals for saving on weight. If purchasing the Backcountry, Outdoor Gourmet (expensive) or the fantastic Strive (awesome Tassie company www.strivefood.com.au came across their meals while doing the 3 Capes with a Tassie native) meals, put it all in a sandwich bag to cook in the Sumo. So much easier.
