TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Dumb Gaiter Question

Postby farkewie » Wed 24 Feb, 2010 9:05 pm

Hi,

I have a dumb question.

We have purchased some S2S Overland gaiters for the SCT. I now also know they are probably going to break on the first trip they get used. but hey, its a learning experience. but im a bit confused. there is the long cord underneath them do i loop it over the top of my foot? or does the knot just go on the side of my foot? I would think if the knot is on the side wouldn't it get caught on things? But it hardly seems long enough to go over the top.

If someone could post back that would be great. or even a pic :-)

I know.. Stupid question feel free to point that out too :-0

"The only stupid question is the one left unasked"

Nah it definitely goes under the arch of your boot, not over. I've never actually seen a pair of S2S Overland gaiters in the flesh but can you jam the knot (in the bungee cord) into one of the the nylon loops on the sides of the gaiter that the cord goes through? That might offer some protection to it.

Hey if they do disintegrate at least they are an inexpensive set disintegrating. From what I've seen from others posts it doesn't seem to matter how much you cough up, they all die premature deaths, so why spend a fortune! :D

Hi

Much as Sthghes says. The underloop strap system appears to be the same as one version of the WE gaiters I have. In my experience it will be race between the knot falling and the cord being cut through so do not be too worried as it is a disposable bit designed to wearout. However, take a spare piece of cord as depending on the terrain it can last as little as three days or a very long time. The main thing is to make sure it is under the arch of the boot as it is quite easy to snag it on one of the ridges on the heel and then life expectancy is measured in hours regardless of the ground conditions.

For the OLT they should be fine. The main reason gaiters fall is narrow tracks and bush bashing. It never ceases to amaze me how much damage an hour of bush bashing can do to trendy gear such as merino tops, mesh pocketed packs, light weight rain gear, etc.

Cheers Brett
