waterproof bags and packliners

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Just wonderin if anyone knows of a manufacturer of up to 90L capacity light-weight-ish stuffsacks / packliners that also have a airvalve (like on a sleeping mat) as well as the main rolltop opening?
(also looking for some smaller ones too)
If not, any suggestions on where i can get a bag modified? - I have a STS 90L sil bag atm
Cheers folks, Liam

Hi

I use the OR 25 litre ones that squashed flat for storing clothes and acts a proper pillow being about the size of a normal pillow. Most USA sites have them but have not spotted them in Tassie. Mine is the ultra heavy one (will what would you expect from me) but there are lighter weight versions.

Cheers Brett

PS the S2S Event bags are good as well as you can pack them and then squeeze the air out. Though they tend to be in small sizes and not cheap.

Hi Liam,

I came across this when I was answering a question on swimming with a pack.

Halfway down the page, they have "Shrink bags" in a range of sizes that are what you describe, but I've never seen one or used one. As Brett said, they may be a bit smaller and you may need to use 2.

I have an Exped "pack liner" that I picked up in the UK, where they were common - anybody'd think it rains alot more than here or summat.

Cheers,

eddie

Yeah I really am looking for a larger size that is ACTUALLY WATERPROOF?! I guess i can do without the valve on the larger liner... thought it might be useful for topping up the air for river crossings - my main method is Putting the pack into a heavy grade hospital "biohazard" plastic bin liner (really thick plastic bag - find an orderly and suck up a bit..) i have found the STS will leak over time despite extra seam sealing and spray coatings on the outside too... I use a parachute cord line to pull the pack after i have crossed - dont swim with your pack on (at least undo the waist strap) -particularly with faster water - unless you wanna risk a Darwin Award at some future time...
Cam from Macpac is going to find out what sizes their factory can go up to, so I will let you know what I find... I sometimes put a little vaseline / nikwax into the fold seam opening on the dry bag too just in case...

Liam, I am getting a 50L/70L/90L roll top liners made with a siliconised 30D cordura. These will be seamtaped, but not air valved...
the heavvier weight TPU coated drybags cut out at around 50L for us.

Didn't Ian Maley at We do PVC heavy duty roll-top inserts for the big WE expedition packs>.??
Just looked and could not see any tho.
Is the air valve to add air or squeeze it out?
I just use a big plastic bag, a cut down 200l drum liner ( same as I keep in my emergency kit as a just in case bivvy)

I suppose if you stitch up your own using lightweight coated nylon you could always topcoat it with diluted silicon on the non-coated side
Ve are too soon old und too late schmart

On the larger size i was thinkin to add air -probably just one more bit to break/leak in reality... on the smaller ones to squeeze it out...but there are versions of that around - might have to paint them up to make them more waterproof outside (cheapish brands that leak given long enough)
Let me know when you're ready Cam please... and thanks for lookin into it etc! Cheers, Liam
