It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Runout on Scarpa SL M3

I am the very proud owner of a new pair of size 43 euro Scarpa SL M3 boots.

These were purchased instore today. I paid $299 reduced from $499! I know they also had size 41 euro which was too small for me. They did not have size 42 euro. I'm not sure what else they had.

These don't have a goretex lining however I'm not too bothered about that since we don't get much knee-deep mud in the Blue Mountains where I walk 99% of the time.

PM me if you want to know where I bought them

You wont need Goretex trust me!! These are a great strong if not heavy and tiring boot!! goretex falls to bits far too quickly. These will last you!

Congratulations on a good purchase!!

Very happy with the price I paid. They feel much more sturdy than my old boots. I'm working on wearing them in whilst I do my ironing.

Hi flatfoot, well done on the find.

These appear to be the older model released before 2006?
if its the old model, dont worrry coz theres not much difference between the pre/post 2006 models except for cosmetic, a more flexible ankle and a bit lighter.

Ive got a pair of goretex Millets, and Much much prefer my SL M3 for their robustness when going into unknown territory.
However, these leather scarpas will take a fair bit more "breakin in" before they feel comfortable. My millets felt comfy straight out of the box while the scarpas took 300km of walking before i stopped doubting them if they were the right shoe for me.

I buy alot of stuff online, but when it comes to shoes, i much prefer buying in stores if i can because its one of those "try before you buy" items.

For anyone interested, Peak XV in Kent street (sydney) is closing down their hiking section and millet boots were reduced crazy! $1200 Millet Everest were going for $300 (sold out).
I got a pair of $900 Millet Alpinist for $300 (still a few sizes left)
And my Millet Trek which i bought for $500 are now all $150!!!!
Theres a few other bargains there too at the moment.

You're right! They are the pre-06 model you pictured.

I've been wearing them at home and they're starting to feel comfortable already. Glad I didn't pay full price if they're a four-year old boot. The store didn't explain the differences but I wasn't going to pay $499 for the newer model.

My intention on going into the store was to try some different designs on and familiarise myself with features / price. I was then going to wait for a sale before buying. These looked like a good boot and I wasn't going to miss out on the bargain.

SL M3 are awesome. Totally bomb proof. The off-track boot of choice.

Runout on Scarpa SL M3

Postby flatfoot » Wed 05 Jan, 2011 10:23 pm

Thanks for confirming their durability. I'm looking forward to trying them out in the bush. Will spend a couple of weeks wearing them in at home.

Still undecided as to weather I should apply snoseal cold (don't want to heat the boots to apply it) or to use Nikwax as I've read about on these forums.

Do you apply it to cold boots or do you pre-heat your boots? For my old boots I was putting them in an extinguished oven (in accordance with snoseal instructions) but I'm wary of damaging any bonding / seals in the boots.

Just cold.
They need re-doing after each extended trip, but when done they look brand new.

Ive had these boots 18months now, and they still look great. Before I got them I had 3 pairs of Mammut/Reichle fall to bits on me in less than 12 months!! They are much more expensive than the Scarpas, but also of a much less quality.

I use snoseal because I am trying to soften the leather a bit. I normally apply it on a sunny day (in Adelaide) with my finger (no cloth) and find this is sufficient to warm the boot/ rub the sno seal in.

Thanks! I'll give that a try. I'm guessing you have a waterproof finger now

Do you still have them? You should post some photos in this thread: http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=5612

In my experience Nixwax works as well as Snoseal, and leaves the boot looking better.

Scarpas - yuk! Most uncomfortable boot on the market.

I use Snowseal as well. Applied using wife's hair dryer and rubbing in by hand. Do this on a lot of newspaper. Be careful if you burn the newspaper afterward as all that wax makes them explode in the open fire.
I figure if it isn't too hot for my hands to be under the hair dryer, it isn't too hot for the boot.
I keep applying it til it won't take any more. A well used pair of boots may take around a quarter of a tub (that's for both boots) but usually less from memory, not one of those things I monitor how much I use.
A surgical rubber glove can help but they usually break because of all the rubbing, they rip open on the lace hooks I think.

NNW Sorry to hear you don't like Scarpa's.

Thanks for describing your texhnique. I'll resort to using a warm sunny spot for readying the boots for application of snoseal.

Ive only tried one set but not really a fan either, went to Zamberlan Vioz after them (similar but comfortable straight from the box). I have seen the Scarpas in several places usRRP around the $250 mark for the current model (for those who know their size)

Just because you aren't on the list . . . :P

As Luvverboy says, it's about the shape of the foot. I do find it odd that someone can find Asolos too narrow but Scarpas that fit, however. Width is an issue for me, as well as arch support and height over the instep.

I lolled. Yeah, I know. I have had Garmonts, and they grind the top of my toes off. Scarpas fit me so well. Boots, runners etc. I'd buy Scarpa ballet shoes.
