TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Deuter Support Issues

Hi guys,

Just looking for any advice you might have
I've had a Deuter Quantum 55+10 for the last year or so. It really hadn't seen much use until I went backpacking around South America for 2 months.

The daypack basically started falling apart early on in the trip - one of the lower strap attachments came off, and the joins of both straps in the shoulder region have partially pulled apart and started fraying. The carry handle also has broken. I took it for repairs in Peru, and even had to stitch it together to get through the Inca trail, but it broke again soon after.

Needless to say I was quite disappointed with the quality of this pack. When I got back I took it to the retailer, and was told the Deuter rep won't repair it under warranty. Now I definitely wasn't expecting them replace for free, but when I asked whether I could purchase another daypack separately they quite bluntly told me I'd have to buy the travel pack as well as they only sell them together, and could I please come and pick up my tattered pack.

Now I'm sure Deuter stocks plenty of spare parts/buckles etc, and it seems odd that they wouldn't have a replacement daypack available for purchase. I'm not convinced the retailer looked into this option either. I can't find a contact for Deuter in Australia - so is there any other options to explore?

Cheers,

Deuter are not exactly a quality brand... i have a travel pack that i use when car camping/flying, and it has held up well for a few years now. every other piece of deuter gear i have ever owned (almost all has come to me as a 'gift') has fallen apart in the first couple of uses... i wouldnt get your hopes up, it is a mass produced piece of kit that sells at the lower end of the price scale...

if i was you, i would cut my losses and spend some coin on a pack that will last and has the warranty to back up the quality.

if you really want to chase the path of repair, then contact wherever the head office is and ask how you would go about warranty etc, they should be able to put you on to the regional office. otherwise, find someone locally who can repair it?

Cheers guys, I was under the impression that Deuter was a quality brand from doing some reading around the Internet - and it certainly wasn't that cheap to buy from an Australian retailer! It's ironic that one point the salesman used to sell it to me is that apparently it's popular amongst European backpackers, so it's meant to be easy to get spare parts worldwide...hah!

The main travel pack has held up reasonably well (apart from the waist buckle snapping - eventually fixed, but that's another story), but I'm disappointed with the durability of the daypack - I'll have to take a photo and post it up when I pick it up from the store.

To be honest, my main motivation to get the daypack fixed/buy a replacement is so I can sell it as a complete package and get something else!

Thanks for the contact info, and I'll definitely try and chase up Deuter directly even though they seem to have minimal presence here in Australia, and will keep you posted.
