TopoView DVD

I'm wondering whether anyone has experience with the TopoView DVD. It is basicly a digital copy of all 1150 Maps at 25:000, 1:50000 and 1:100000 covering NSW. It looks like a usefull and comprehensive resource. Unfortunately it is about $280 plus postage available here: http://www.lpma.nsw.gov.au/mapping_and_imagery/maps

I currently spend $9.50 on a map and then do my best to protect it from rain and dirt in my map case. I also recently found out that I can't buy Northern NSW maps over the counter from the Geosciences Map shop here in ACT. Pain in the..... I have to order it online for about $14 posted.

I would consider buying the DVD if I could get A0 prints made for less than say $6 but this is unlikely. How do others use thier 1:25000 topos?

Can you divide the print into borderless A4 and then tape together??
Does this DVD come with free updates??

I don't have experience with that particular mapp / Dvd but I do have the Vic version and I don't use it as I don't really like it .. I'm mostly a map man too & a Gps , I get my maps laminated from Office works and fold em up , I have Oztopo version 2.0 on my Gps and my next investment will be Version 3.0 see here. http://www.oztopo.com.au/.

Just a second thought, but most shopfront printers can do that size, how much would they charge for a single print??

Yep, I have Topo View Raster 2006.

It is basicaly a scan of every NSW Topo map current in 2006. The unfortunate thing about this is that a lot of maps have been upgraded in the years past then, so the datum on the disc maps in some cases isnt as per the current maps.

It is my understanding that there is not an update in the pipe line.

Topo view works well for me. I print the areas that I will be walking on full scale (usually 3 or 4 sheets for a walk), on A4 color then laminate them.
I use these for my navigation, as once laminated you have to try hard to destroy them. I then carry a full version which I would only bring out in the case of Geographical Misplacement to give me features that arn't shown on the laminated excerpts.

I've used the NZ mapped CDs for the last 5yrs , which I presume are similar. I print out the sections I am interested in on A4 paper at home, at the scale that suits, and keeping the ones used for route finding whilst walking in zip-lock bags, and laminating those that will be used near water (we are normally also fishing and packrafting). Additonally I carry a fine tip waterproof pen so I can write notes on the laminated maps where needed. As most of the areas I am visiting have no tracks, the age of the map is irrelevant, as I'm only interested in the topography. The data on the NZ ones can also be uploaded to a GPS, with computer generated notes, but I still am happy to use a compass when needed, so have not tried this.

The CDs of the Sth Is cost me (I think) about $140 5yrs ago. I love them, and despite only going there once a year, they allow unlimited planning of trips to anywhere in the Sth Is, without having to go looking for where you stored the map sheet.

One standard map equates to 10 A4 pages. 10 colour pages printed at home for each map is pretty expensive. I'd just as sooner buy it for 9.50 and not pay $280 for the disc. At $6 printed I'd have to print 80 NSW maps to justify the expense which is more than I'll ever need. Having a computer based map is some justification so I reckon somewhere around $6 is the most I'll pay for the print out.

Or I could just print the section I need on A4 and hope I don't need to escape or triangulate.

I would like to know? The only thing I could find online was poster print at around $55. I found a section on orienteering maps here http://www.orienteering.asn.au/technica ... ntingmaps/ . I reckon I might be able to track something down through an orienteering or rogaining club.

Great to know you're getting some use out of it. I will try and avoid buying maps off the shelf if I go down this route which is why I'd like to print in A0 rather than standard A4.

I have the old CD that covers the southern half of NSW, where I do most, if not all my trips.
I find it great as you can merge maps that abutt each other, even if they're diferent scales.
I love that fact you can print off 1 map that consists of the 4 corner areas of the maps that all join each other, eg the area around Tabletop Mtn

If I could get the equivalent for Tasmania at that price, I'd be very happy. Unfortunately, we get charged about 10 times that amount, for a land mass a fraction of the size.

I asked around today in Canberra. An A0 print is around $40-50.
