People occasionally lose cameras in the bush. People who find them are at a loss how to get them back to their owner.
The following article describes two sites which can help find a stolen camera. It looks like they might be able to be used to find the owner of a found camera.

I gave both services a quick try using the serial numbers of the three DSLRs that my wife and I own. I have used all three bodies to take photos which I have uploaded to flickr. Cameratrace drew a blank on all three, and Stolencamerafinder manager to trace one of the bodies to my flickr account.

A few people have had the same issue. It seems that some sites strip the EXIF info, or maybe report it in a different way. When I find stuff, I take it to the Police station. This is what you are supposed to do so this is where you should check for lost property isn't it? Some of these items were unclaimed and are now legally mine. Others I never heard about so assume were claimed, at least I hope so.
