Sunglasses which to get,what are you wearing ?

I am on the hunt for a pair of sunglasses, I guess I want some polarized sunglasses right, I want to use them to go trout fishing so I guess I need em to see the fishes, but I also want a good pair to protect my eyes and cut the glare down and maybe even be good in snow if I even camp in the snow.

Any recommendations on brands, types ect, I would like to be able to try them before I buy as well.

/PS I am willing to pay 100 to 200 bucks for a decent pair, but less would be better, would be nice if I could wear them out other than camping as well.

With fishing polarised is the way to go but they are murder for electronic devices reading displays. Unless things have changed all sunglasses in Australia need to meet Australian standards. This means it is more a matter of style. I find that the Polarised brand are economical and work well. I for bushwalking prefer glass lenses but they are expensive and heavy.

Cancer Council have a decent range of polarised sunnies too. I just use the freebies that get handed out at work, not making any fashion statements but they're robust and fairly comfortable

But for the snow you need SP (Specific Purpose) sunglasses which cut more light and glare and pass less UV and IR, in winter I used to wear the fitovers on top of prescription photochromatics , even the best photochromatics pass too much light, UV & IR.
Unfortuneatley the Cancer Council and the makers of Fit-overs do not make SP sunglasses.
Amber or Carmine lenses work best for me

I have two pairs of polarising sunglasses. One pair has amber tinted lenses and the other is the conventional grey tint. The amber ones are my snow/funny rain conditions sunglasses. The grey ones I use for general purpose and when sailing.

The best sunnies I ever had were Rayban Cats and I had two pairs with my preferred lens tints. They had glass lenses, which I also prefer. Unfortunately I also have a tendency to put them down and forget to pick them up, so I lost both pairs over the course of about 24 months.

On the subject of glass lenses ..... who makes them these days? It is becoming increasing difficult to find them locally.

I use a pair of Rudy Project Rydon. They have replaceable lenses (Moondog, you can get High Altitude lenses for these) - I have some photochromatic/polarised almost clear which are great in winter, and some darker photochromatic for bright sun.

Rudy Project are big in sport glasses for cycling etc. Many of their designs support prescription clips behind the sunglass lens.

Not sure which mine are, but I think they're the Bolle Blade glasses (page 63).
I get them for about $4 a pair.
Doesn't matter (apart from the environment) if they get lost.
Cheap, great fit.

Also Adidas make interchangeable lens sunnies. I currently use the old Evil Eye Pro L with the silver LST lens most days esp in bush and the dark GOLD Space Lens for glaciers, really bright conditions, then lighter lenses for lower light. Saves me having to buy extra sunnies, not that the lenses are cheap but cheaper than additional sunnies, plus they fit me. Trick: buy your spare lenses in NZ, waaay cheaper

I was REALLY lucky to get out of that with no eye damage.

I picked up a pair of Randolf glass lenses. Allegedly they can fend of shotgun pellets and broken aircraft screen so it depends on the glass used in the lens.

Yeah. Wander in, take a look at the cheapest tinted plastic safety glasses that they have, and see what price they will do for you.
There are a good number of pairs that are cheap - certainly less than $10. You can pay more for others that they have. With their range, you're likely to find something you like that fits the price point of "don't care about them".
I do know some people there, so they might hav elooked after me, but I also know they cannot move much on price, especially for a cheap item like these. So I doubt I saved much on RRP if anything - at the price, I didn't look (or care).

I used to always buy the cheaper pairs of sunglasses, always arriving back home with sore strained eyes, thought I would try some of the dearer glasses, best thing I have ever done. I now own a pair of Spotters made in Australia and a pair of Maui Jim's. The Maui Jim's are my favorite.

+100 for the Maui Jim's. I have 2 pairs, one set are glass and really really good just a bit heavy and I always worry about glass in active situations so I have a set with polycarbonate lenses and they're still great. The thing I notice most over cheaper pairs are how much light they stop and the overall clarity.

My latest pair are Wiley Romer II's which I've been really happy with. They are light and I find them very comfortable, hard for me to say that about many sunglasses as I have a large noggin but these fit nicely and I've had them for about a year and they're still going strong... The interchangeable lenses are made of ballistic polycarbonate so double as safety glasses and come in a variety of types, clear for a work environment, cycling or running at night, orange for overcast or low light days, etc and tinted for sunny days. They came with 3 different lenses and also with a good protective pouch and cleaning cloth. Weren't that expensive at around $80 with 3 different pairs of lenses included and replacement lenses are only about $20 if you lose or break a set.

I just got bought some Polarized, Ultra Violet sunnys, just wondering how I could go about testing them before I take them out, I was wanting to use them for some fishing in streams so I can see the fishys, but alI have is a river nearby and i don't think that is clear enough to see into


Are Ultra violet polarized sunnys any good for fishing, pretty sure they will work fine as sunnys in general.

After being a long time Adidas wearer I had the chance to try on the Oakley Radars the other day and boy is there a noticeable difference in fit and construction quality as well as lens quality. The Adidas is good, but the Oakleys are just SO much better with similar prices now that I know my next pair will no longer be Adidas

When I was in the city the other week I found a pair of polarised glasses with little holes at the top. I thought this might help with them not fogging up? I have been unable to find them online. I am not sure what brand they were.

Agree, Oakleys are way over priced but nothing else fits as good...

Found these at Bunnings the other day. I struggle to find glasses that fit me well but these are very comfy. Best of all, they're only $12!

Didnt you talk to the fishos? They know what works for their sport, its pretty well understood.

Then visit cancercouncil for something that fits for a second general scratch em up set.

No they're not, but to honest I've gone off Polaroids for every day usage. Those lines in the rear windscreen make it really hard to see! The only place I'd go back to Polaroids now is around the water.

Id been looking for sunnies for a while but needed something for kayaking as well so anti-fogging was important.
After reading this blog article I ended up getting a pair of Eyres Mistrals.
No complaints so far..no fogging whatsoever and I like the strap on the back as they never fall off.

Big difference - cost-wise, is the need for sunglasses (polarised for sightfishing) versus prescription sunglasses
I need script sunnies, I also trout fish, and walking I have problems with a) fogging b) slipping, even with ties/toggles/floats
Mine have to look good too (which cuts out ones like Cancer Council etc)
