TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Hilleberg Nammatj 2 price

Mon 13 Aug, 2012 9:23 pm

Has anyone recently purchased a Hilleberg Nammatj 2 tent? Moontrail and Backcountry Gear have them for $610 + $90 postage - is this a good price or does someone do better?

Check out these guys...

They try to keep their prices pretty much inline with US prices.

When I priced my Soulo through those guys about 2 weeks ago, they were $50 more than the Hilleberg website. (US based.)

50 bucks is pretty fair for a small Aus company that provides free shipping

Yeh. I have to agree. Thats pretty good value.

I purchased mine from Moontrail. The points system was great. But the extra items incresed the cost of freight considerably.

Very true, it took hardly any time to get here from Hilleberg itself anyway. I should mention that it was $50 more from the aussie place, including the shipping cost from Hilleberg. Either way, great tents.

Thanks guys,

I looked at the Mountain Adventure Centre website but they don't stock the Nammatj. I couldn't find any other retailer of Hilleberg tents in Oz. Spoke to Shannon at Hilleberg in the US, and I've made the purchase. Tent was US$610, footprint was US$68, with US$80 postage via Air Express (3-5 days delivery from the US). Gotta be happy with that - can't wait.

Good perchance! It'll be here in no time, they have really good delivery! :D

In all these calculations, people need to factor in their "hourly rate" for paid work. If your hourly rate is low, it is worth the friggin around on the net etc . If your hourly rate is higher, it needs some thought. I am fortunate enough to have a higher hourly rate of pay. If is spend more than 15mins fluffing around with many of these purchases, it just isn't worth it from a $ point of view.

If saving $50 takes an hour of Internet searching, is it worth it?

Even if you have a good pay rate, $50 is still $50. I'd rather save that $50 if I could. I don't really see you point here.

I work with a neurologist who charges $270/patient and sees 3-4 patients an hour.
consultants in my actuarial profession also charge well over $1000/hour too.
In these extreme cases I would imagine they really cant be half bothered about wasting time looking around for the best deals. They buy what they want.

My previous job paid about $250/hour but i'm still stingy and hunt around for bargains because its part of the fun.

(FYI Andrew is an established doctor and would probably be on the upper band, so his point of view would be quite abit different from a bargain hunter like me)

Ive got a red nammatj 3 for $500 if anyone wants.
used only 2 nights.

Andrew, what an intriguing concept ! I normally do my online shopping after hours so fail to apply my hourly rate to these activities. However I see the advantage of your method. No longer will those slow websites with complicated check out processes frustrate me or will I get annoyed at their clunky search tools. Instead I will simply shop during work hours and bill the website for the extra time I spent based on my hourly rate. Thanks for opening my eyes

It's called opportunity cost, and is the cost of the next best alternative. Basic economic principle.

For example a brain surgeon is better off operating on brains and paying someone else to mow his lawn, as he will be paid more to operate on brains than he would be to mow lawns.

Reading all this does make sense, but PERSONALLY $50 is a great saving for me so I'll take my winnings thank you.

Right - so we've gone from me asking about a tent, to a discourse on economic theory in about six posts. Anyone prepared to provide an answer to life, the universe and everything before the end of the page?

That's an easy one - the answer is 42. Now a difficult question is where can you buy the cheapest Hilleberg tents ?

The theory only works on the assumption that if you weren't shopping on the Internet you would be working an earning money. If you enjoy abit of shopping in your own personal time or you have a job that allows you to get away with surfing the net while still getting charged out then it doesn't work

Re: Hilleberg Nammatj 2 price

Wed 15 Aug, 2012 8:46 pm

There is a few problems with the calculation e.g.
- $50 saved is not $50 earned when you consider taxes, etc
- The marginal value of time changes depending on the activity. Most people would not consider searching time as painful as work and would happily except a lower compensation rate
- The assumption that most people would consider web searching time as a cost activity is likely wrong. Some may enjoy it so much they may even be prepared to pay - e.g. in earlier days pay for an internet cafe to search for savings
- Humans are not rational - dollars are not equal lost, earned or saved. $50 saved can feel really good - for no rational reason. Perhaps just scratching the instinct to get the best deal :)
- There are additional benefits to searching which are not valued - e.g. searching for the tent you might find a site that has killer deals on jackets or a blog that provides great information
- Most people are not in the position to work as many hours as they like at their typical rate. Many can only work 38hrs etc - the barrier to further hours (another job) is too much. So $50 saving can be good use of excess time when on the margin
- Everyone knows that time surfing the web for outdoor gear is a close substitute for real time in the wilderness :

Ok this is just getting out of hand now. We don't need a debate about my personal option to save $50 (which ended up buying me a new drink bottle and a bunch of dry bags). We are here to support Alan and his choice in a wonderful tent brand. I think we can all agree on that.

OK this is getting a bit wierd - I've bought the tent and I saved $50.

Yay - grats on the tent.
PS hubby and I are veterinarians and we pay someone to mow the lawn. We'd rather go bushwalking on Sunday!
