TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Best Tent Design Uneven Ground

Most tents can be made to set well in the back garden or a tent platform but the further into the wilderness you go the choice of tent sites diminishes and sometimes you have to compromise with one corner of the tent higher than the rest. What tent shape is the most forgiving of uneven ground? Tents like the Aarn Pacer look good when taught but how easy is it to get these complex shapes to set well with less than ideal camp sites? Are simpler tunnel designs better in this regard?

Generally speaking a long narrow tent is easier to find a spot than a squarer design. Or at least in my experience. Some of the hoop over single person tents can take up a remarkable amount of space. But on platforms long tents can be a pain.

On uneven ground you will do better with tent/tarp based on a fly sheet/tarp and a separate inner tent rather than an integrated free standing tent. By having a separate fly and inner you can pitch the fly clear of the ground. The exact clearance depends on the nature of the uneveness. If the ground is really problematic there is no need to erect the inner; just use it as a ground sheet. Of course if there are trees around you may be better off with a hammock.
