TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Canyoning equipment checklist: What gear is needed?

Fri 16 Nov, 2012 12:56 pm

G'day folks,

I've been planning to do this for about a year, but never got the time until now. I've finally produced a detailed canyoning equipment checklist to help people pack the most appropriate gear when they come on canyoning trips.

http://fatcanyoners.org/bush-guide/canyoning-equipment-list/

It goes through all the items you will need, with a few lines covering that item in detail. Mainly I thought this would be useful when we run beginner canyoning weekends, rather than answering the same questions 20 times. But what I've done to make it more useful, and something that I'll link to on a whole lot of trips -- including harder ones -- is produce a series of printable PDF checklists to help when you're packing for a canyoning trip, whether an easy day trip, a lilo trip, or a multi-day epic. You can check out the checklists here:

While I've had a few canyoning mates look over it and make some additions and changes, it's still a work in progress, so I'd love any feedback about items I've missed, errors I've included, and ways to make it better / more useful.

Very handy list Tim, I'll probally also link to it when running beginner trips in future too.

One suggestion is to add a photo of your recommended item next to the category.
doesnt really change anything but makes it much more pleasant to look at.

maybe you can also do one for mountaineering while you're at it hey? This involves hiking gear, camping gear, cooking gear, climbing gear, protection gear, communication safety gear etc. Ive always wanted to do something like this but am much too lazy to do such a list.

Great idea re the pics. I doubt I'll do one for each item, but a few pics of a normal abseiling setup (harness with everything on gear loops), pack with normal contents, overnight gear etc would break up the text and illustrate the points.
I've been thinking of doing a similar one for bushwalking, although there are more of those around. I also doubt you'd be able to beat that second document for detail! That thing would have taken ages to produce.
