TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Best Aus 1:25K map for GPS

Tue 23 Jul, 2013 2:02 pm

Hi,

I'm after some opinions.

I'm looking at buying a GPS (most likely the new Garmin Oregon 600) I was looking at buying the 600T but its only loaded with 1:100K maps.

I see there are a number of choices for aftermarket 1:25k which would be far better.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
EB

OzTopo if you are willing to fork the price. Otherwise a mix of OSM (OpenStreetMap - free) and Contour Australia ($20) can also work.

If you are after something cheap, try OpenCycleMap. Free 10m contours topo with most bushwalking tracks on it.
You can download them here: http://mapas.alternativaslibres.es/descargas.php
The page is spanish but still works

If you want more detail try Contours Australia, 5m contours topo for ~20$. This is only contours though - must be combined with another map. http://www.lizarddrinking.net/purchase.html

Tracks4Australia is a digitisation of the old 250K maps. Innacurate. Free. Compact (50mb total)
