Hello every one, I am looking at getting a macpac microlight tent,I have been told the latest ones are made using a lighter/thinner fly compared to the older ones,new weight is 1.5kg down 300grams and a different colour, has anyone seen the new type and if so do they still look as tough as the old version.

Hi. the new material on the tents is a UV30si/si (UV resistant, 30denier fabric with silicone coating both sides). this fabric is actually stronger than the previous material (in tear/tensile strenght before and after UV exposure) yet it weighs 10g less per m2. the difference is in the yarn type. Costs more but better performance (with reuced weight as an additional benefit).

we developed that 2 pole freestanding version in 2 models- a new microlite and a new roomier version, the Macrolite. After surveying the market (here and EU) the single pole Microlite went ahead, not the 2 pole version (reason=a little less weight). the 2 pole/2 person macrolite will come out later this year.

by whom? Not that may samples have been in testing, and none in Aus...
one sample was full mesh, andother half mesh inner. Most tester felt the weight saving of full mesh was negated by the tent being too cold...

A good instance where on line information needs to be pro active from manufacturers as I can only find information on my existing Microlite not the "new you beaut one"
which may have encourage me to spend my $900.00 windfall.

Tarptent, Macpac blah. They're all just cheap Hilleberg copies. 10gsm saving really- is that a selling point?

The new microlight with the lighter fabric seems to be alright and tough enough, I just went hiking with a friend who has the new model, and I took my dad's 15 year old model (at closer to 2kg), and neither of us had any issues with wind/rain (of which there was heaps), though the problem with all microlights if you're a tall person is that the peak height area is only about 10 cm wide and they do all have a slight tendency for the inner to sag inwards a bit, claiming even more of the peak height area. I'm hoping that the new macpac macrolight design (reincarnation of the Fairydown Assault sans the 3rd pole?) will do something to address this and result in a one man tent with more space, but a better 3 season + ability than the MSR Hubba design which (apparently) isn't that stable in high wind.

Not too much in the old one, courtesy of the all mesh door (which also made for a cold night) but I'm not sure about the new one, I'll ask my mate and see if he noticed much in the way of condensation build-up in the new model.

*Edit*

After conferring with my friend, he said there's no noticable problem with condensation on the newer model, even though he had the door's mesh panel closed up for the night.

I would like to purchase a new tent for this years snow season, the microlite is one of two tents that I have short listed, will the lighter Microlites be in the shops any time soon.

Tony, we have some stock now, but they may be getting patchy ...you could always call up a local macpac store or mail order and they can find you one.

I'm in need of a light weight tent for solo walks too (I love my MacPac Olympus, but it's much bigger, and heavier, than I need when walking solo). The Microlight is on my shortlist, but I'll have to see if I can get a look at a Macrolight some time. Unfortunately, the nearest MacPac shop is 2 hours drive from Launceston.

I work at one of the macpac stores and we've been told not to expect the new macrolight tents till October or thereabouts. As for microlights, demand has been far outstripping supply at the moment.

Hi there. I'm looking to replace my old three man MacPac tent. It's 15+ years old - still no leaks but starting to fray a bit as the kids work it over. Anyway, it seems MAcPac don't do a three man tent anymore? I need the size for 1 adult and 2 kids and packs. Any ideas of tips?

Microlite is a 1 person, macrolite is a 2 person (due a bit closer to summer)

Brett, thanks for your comments about the Aktos/Scarptents. Why did you discount the Microlight from your evaluation process? The one advantage of it that I can see is that it might be easier to get in Australia.
