TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

EDIT: S2S Aeros Premium vs Exped Air Pillow

Wed 30 Dec, 2015 9:01 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a pillow which is suitable for multi-day walks. I should mention that I'm a stomach and side sleeper and I often slide my arms under my pillow.

What do you think about stuffed vs inflated pillows? And what camping pillow would you recommend?

Thanks,
David

Hi David. Try a search of the forums. Pillows have been discussed extensively on at least a couple of occasions :)

I have a S2S Aeros Premium which I find far better than the stuffed stuff sack. I'm a side/back/stomach sleeper with arms under pillow etc. It doesn't slide around too much, squashs small, easily inflated and very comfortable.

There are a few threads here where people have discussed the pillow issue, so it's worth having a look through those. [Edit: somehow I missed Strider's post  ]

It's a personal thing though - some people love what doesn't work for other people. I've tried a lot of options over the years, as a side sleeper. In the end I went for this one, and I'm a very happy camper. Very light, at around 37 gm, cradles my head well.

Only thing is that Backpacking Light, where I got mine in Melbourne, doesn't list it on their website at the mo. Might still have them though.

What Gayet said ! I've never had a comfy backpacking pillow until buying a S2S Aeros Premium ayear ago....excellent and packs-up tiny. I went for the large size but it's still a very small package and super-light. Cheers

I personally use a Klymit Pillow X and find it to be great as a primarily side-sleeper. The relatively unique shape of it really helps cradle your head and keep it there. In the past I have found models similar to the Aeros to slip out from under me during the night.

Thanks for all your replies.

I'm debating between the Sea To Summit Aeros Premium and Exped Air Pillow. Would anyone be able to share their thoughts on how the two compare?

For future reference, here are a few pillow threads that I found:

Re: EDIT: S2S Aeros Premium vs Exped Air Pillow

The Exped is likely to be a bit slipperier than the S2S. The S2S has a fabric outer with a very slight pile to it so it stays put better. The Exped has a laminated surface with a honeycomb embossing to provide grip. I have not used the Exped but have used something similar and I chased it around all night.

My 2c worth.

Im another fan of the aeros. I never usually sleep well when I'm tenting it (my hammock however zzzz), but my current combo is the aeros premium pillow and the big agnes q core sl mat. Just like sleping at home. Highly recommend the pillow

I tried the S2S Aeros Premium out and it was great. (Naturally) The large was more comfortable than the regular. I'm wondering if the added comfort justifies the extra price and weight?

Determine the benefit in terms of comfort - give that a rating between 1 an 10
Determine the difference in weight space and cost and give that a rating 1 to 10. If comfort is higher than weight space cost then go with the large

Simple really. :)

I used a S2S Aeros Premium for 3 weeks in New Zealand last year. I ended up using it for height and stuffing a stuff sack with clothes and using it on top. I can't stand traditional air-filled pillows (or mats), it's like sleeping on a balloon. Instead, I recommend the Black Wolf Self-Inflatable Pillow. If you don't overinflate it you'll get an indent and it actually feels squishy and lofty like a real pillow.

Have both - I have found equally comfortable and a goo part of the sleeping set up.

Exped delaminated for me after four years. Need I say more.

+1 for the Aeros. Best by a long mile.

I have both in my shop and I think the S2S is currently more comfortable :)
