TIP: The online
Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

My 20+ years old Timberland rain shell that has been used primarily for skiing has finally had it. It's no longer waterproof (in a bad way) and with each shake of the jacket, it snowed flakes of the old waterproofing membrane. Oh well, got my money worth for 20 years I guess. But the outer is still in perfect shape, without any broken stitching or tears. They built them so tough back then.
So the question is, what can I use this old gear for? What can I do with it? Throwing it out is almost a crime.

Give it a long hot wash to remove as much of the old coating as possible, then Nikwax it and use as a general purpose windshell

conditions where its more likely to be cold wind or snow than rain..
day walks where the lack of DWR won't be such a big issues.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll see if I can get rid of all the flakes but they seemed to be lasting forever. Here in Queenstown at the moment, will give it a good shakeout after getting home.
