TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Hardshell Jacket recommendations?

Fri 07 Apr, 2017 8:39 pm

Hello all.
I'm looking to buy a new jacket and am after some reccomendations.
I'm looking to get a good quality jacket that vents fairly well as I run fairly warm and sweat a lot. It's for winter use in Tasmania.
I have been looking at the Arcteryx range but looking at $800 odd dollars for a good model. Is it worth it? Do they live up to the hype or are there other better jackets out there?
Interested to see what people are wearing.

They look nice. Does it breath well for you?

Nothing lives up to the hype
Strangley tho I don't have a problem with Goretex and goretex clones; on my legs. I wear a Goretex or clone jacket or parka but I put on a poly proofed raincoat when it rains more than a drizzle
Experience is telling me to tell you to buy the cheapest that you can find
I'll be selling my own J&H Canetoad soon it's XL and with an Artigi tail added

Breathes as well as can be expected really. Hasn't had much use in anger but when it had been needed it's really been needed and I've been more concerned about water entering via the hood than a bit of sweat buildup.

I've never bought a brand new Hardshell so I really want to have a new one! I've never cared too much as long as I'm fairly dry. At the moment I walk with a light rainbird rain jacket. Has served me well.

Yeah rain goin down the back in the hood is no good. Sounds like you don't rate it too badly. Might have a look at them.

I am happy with it but in hindsight the length of the Torrent would have been better. I think the C&D is a good compromise due to the lighter weight and the amount of time actually worn.
