TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Year and manufacturer of this Jack Thwaites pack

Tue 16 Aug, 2011 8:01 am

A while ago I wrote up an article about Jack Thwaites over at Our Hiking Blog: http://ourhikingblog.com.au/2010/02/jac ... alker.html

There were a couple of images (used with permission) of his backpack in the article.

I just had a fellow from Wales post a question there.

I was just wondering if you knew anymore about the backpack pictured on this page with the cane frame. I live in Wales in the UK (the Old South Wales!) and found one identical whilst clearing out the loft. Any information such as maker and year would be great!

Thanks,
Neil

I could not help him out but thought some of the knowledgeable people here might be able to help out Neil.

Does anyone have any background on these packs or suggestions where to find more information?

Thanks in advance

Frank

I'll show my father the pictures. He climbed in Wales post war and I remember him having a similar type pack but his had a metal frame. We were still using it in the seventies.

Thanks MJD,
I had a very similar metal framed one when I was in the Scouts in the very early 70's

Sorry, been a bit slow on this one but I have an answer at long last. My father suggests the brand could be "Bukta". His is similar. Metal frame.

My father, who was visiting earlier today, still has this rucksack and went and pulled it out of his shed. It has the three pockets (I've edited the earlier post). He got it from Millets in London, ex Army surplus gear in the late forties. I'll post a picture sometime.
