I've recently been trialling different shelter combos of tents, bivvys, hammock for multi nighters (up to a week) in an endeavour to develop the best system that works for me. In all systems I've been using a silnylon UL tarp and have a shleter system from 600g to 1500g. Obviously I take a system appropriate for the environment and conditions expected.
Curious as to what system you all use.
Some thoughts:
Tarp - First item out of the pack and last to go away. Great by itself in good to moderate weather. Communal shelter for cooking, sitting under if using a tent. Open to the elements and lets you experience what you came to appreciate in the first place, but can be exposed. Can be pitched to meet the environment. Light weight.
Tent - Protection from elements. Heavyish. Can pitch just fly or tent. Large footprint. Roomy. Gives privacy.
Bivvy - small footprint. Not roomy. Not an option on it's own for a week or more if expecting some rain. No privacy, requires outside strip down (not that I'm bothered by that - others may be).
Hammock - Comfy. Pitched to meet the environment. Requires trees or other support. No foot print. Gets you off the ground but may require insulation on the bottom. Heavyish. Open to the elements. May require mozzie protection adding to the overall system weight.
