TIP: The online
Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

I've read a few reports about Steripens not working well in cold temperatures (possibly due to battery issues in the cold).
Have users found one Steripen model works better than another in cold temps like Tassie?

For most bushwalks in Tasmania, most of
these should be OK.

Will these work with rechargeable batteries ?

You may need to use sticky tape or perhaps something more waterproof to stick them to the batteries, but they should work fine.

Glad to see that they come in a wide range of colours!

RSD - I've used mine in the Australian Alps - so around zero degrees and it was OK. I have an earlier model and I've found it unreliable ie. it regularly carks it for no apparent reason on fresh batteries. I've also tried using different types of batteries with no joy. I've heard the newer models are more reliable, or I may try a Sawyer Squeeze Filter instead.

funny you mention that Dale,
Ive used most types of steripens including the bulky ones. Nowadays, I just use my aquamira pro frontier pro. Ive discovered that the end of it screws perfectly onto a platypus, so i just leave the tubing at home.
What i do is scoop 3L of unfiltered water into the platypus, screw on the aquamira, then squirt it into my water bladder. does about 1L per 2 minutes which seems a chore but its much quicker than tablets. The steripen was already 1.5 minutes so this method is not so much slower than a steripen.
On one trip last year i had batteries there were half used on the steripen, but didnt bother taking spare batteries. sure enough batteries ran out during that trip, so on longer trips make sure new batteries are also brought along just in case.
This setup is 81g vs steripens adventurer opti's 132g with the neoprene pouch, and fail safe.
Highly recommended, except for tassie, I wouldnt bother.

another thing with the steripen is that you have to carry a nalgene just to purify the water. Alternatively you dig through your whole pack to find the pot and dump everything out of the pot... oh what a pain.

Sawyer squeeze gets the double thumbs up from me.

Or organise your pack so that that the things that you will need during the day are easily accessible, and the things that you won't need until the end of the day are underneath them.

These Wide-Mouth flexible containers can be easily packed with ice cubes and will accommodate all major filters and purifiers. Available with the loop-top cap. When finished, collapse the container for easy storage.
save your nalgene hardbody bottle for office use.
