How many of us have 2 or more different sets of gear?

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.
Forum rules
TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

I have 5 rucksacks for bushwalking if I count my day packs. In my younger, wealthier days I also used to keep two complete sets ready packed. My winter kit and a much lighter summer kit.
Interested if any-one else does or did do this

Yes.

Packs of various sizes and style.

Ditto tents.

Ditto mats.

Ditto bags.

Ditto wet weather gear.

Ditto boots.

Ditto clothes.

How could you manage with just one set?

Oh and then add the specific winter stuff... Snowshoes, crampons, plastic shell double boots, skis, Ice hammer/axe etc etc

Nope, just one of most things for me. More recently I've gotten a second tent and a second cookset, for solo or 'non-sharing' walks, but gear is expensive, so one of everything is the general rule for me.

I have two or more of most items but many of these are for different purposes. Once I have used and am convinced of the benefits of a new, hopefully better item, I sell off the old stuff. Best to sell stuff in November - fetches a better price.
Tents - 4. 3 x solo and 2 x 2 person - 1 of each is cuben and the most used - I will be selling my other solo tent soon. I have really only just settled on what I want.
Sleeping bags - just a quilt and WM Liteline (extends the quilt for cold conditions)
Mats - only 1
Packs - 1 multi day, 1 day pack plus a S2S sil day pack for travelling
Stoves - 3. 1 solo, 2 x larger groups - 1 will go soon - Fire Maple 117 which is the left overs from creating my 118T.
Pots - my true weakness - Ti in 400, 550, 700, 850, 900, 1300, 1800ml - just can't make up my mind on what I find best so I will just keep them all.
Clothes - 14 pieces that mix and match
Wet weather gear - 2 x jackets of different weights & length and a Gatewood Cape (also counted as a solo tent)
Headlamps 2. eLIte and Tikka XP2 - different uses.
Most other stuff I only have 1 such as water treatment

I have two packs, a stupid mount of daypacks (5-6 at last count), two tents and multiple clothing options (jackets, etc).
With my partner coming on more and more walks my shopping list has grown a lot recently to accommodate for the extra person.

Personally I have no problem with owning multiples pieces of gear so long as it has an application that you utilise. Having things just sit in the cupboard for the sake of it seems of little worth to me.

I have one set of gear...

However, I have enough spare gear that I can fully outfit someone else for walking with everything except a poo shovel...

Tents: 4
Sleeping Bags: 4
Mats: 3
Packs: 3 (inc 1 daypack)
Stoves: 4
Down Jackets: 2 (+ 1 vest)
Waterproof Jackets: 2
Waterproof pants: 2 (and looking for a replacement for one)
Boots: 2 pair
Beanies: 5 (I keep losing them, or finding them, or seeing one that looks better and know I'll need to replace another lost one soon . . . )
DSLR Lenses: 6 (only two regularly go with me, but I just can't sell glass)
Headlamps: 4 (just got the Snow Miner. Will be the go-to lamp now.)(plus a couple of those tiny cheap led torches)
Clothing: At least 20 mix & match items items. (Not including socks and gloves.)

What I use depends on the time of year, the expected weather, where I'm going, how long I'll be out and whether I can be bothered carrying it.

Hmmm.

My preface is that I make a lot of gear:

4 backpacking tents
3 lightweight tarps - no 4 ( and contemplating a Cuban one....)
5 high quality down sleeping bags plus 4 synthetic ones
2 exped insulated sleeping mats, and 4 old thermarests, and 2 other lightweight inflatables
6 rucksacks, 6 day packs
3 gtx jkts for me, plus another 4......
2 gas stoves plus coke can stoves ( clearly not a stove nut!)
2 packrafts
2 sea kayaks

I have 4 kids, 21yo downwards , so we keep a decent sized pool of gear dependent on who wants to do what , normally with me.

And most of the time I have a lot of choice!!

It's difficult to find a tent or a sleeping bag that would work equally well on a ledge in a blizzard or in a constant drizzle in a rainforest.

2 core sets:

1. snow/ cold mountain
2. tropical

Mix and match from there. But always desire for more :)

Guilty as charged, many times over.

Winter gear,
Lighter weight gear,
Stuff it I like to eat properly gear,
Spare set for at least three people (ok I lied, five but helps to be tall)

And what is wrong with that :D

Interestingly I tend to swing between lighter weight gear and then strike unexpected conditions so go back to traditional gear and them back to lighter stuff. Though starting to get more a winter and summer season mix with a luxury set.

Cheers

I think the issue may come down to what you (specifically) are trying to get out of the trip away.

We are all mostly very time limited, and have our own agendas for a trip away. If you always travel with the same person, then it's simpler to sort out your gear needs, but I don't, as my wife and friends have different interests. If I'm going up Bogong in winter with a mate, I at least know that I have spare gear if needed ( they can carry it) so I can at least enjoy my weekend safely. Similarly, having a spare packraft allows me to enjoy some of the trips I'd like to do.

My worst experiences have been going away with I'll equipped friends.

Better to have too much gear I think.

That was a joke...
14 tents, 6 mats, 5 packs plus day packs, 7 stoves (plus several metho types...) 5 sleeping bags, 2 quilts....
That is why I wrote 'I wish I could' because I can't.

I am so glad, I just showed this thread to my beloved with the comment "See, I'm not that over equipped after all"

2 main sets of gear, winter and summer with perhaps another set for Everest/Antarctica as well.
Do I get to count all the old mountaineering gear as another set
I'll have the Yowies if they are being given away.
Hmm
Macpac H-frame in canvas
WE Alpine expedition
WE Breakout
WE Tour-Jour
WE Contour
Karrimor Joe Brown ( falling apart after 40 years )
Sabre school bag ( really well built with poly frame sheet and everything $2- at the local Sallies)
Plus my old army rucksac and some Lowe Tactical assault packs from the 80s waiting to be repaired or thrown out

Only 4 real tents 2 off which have lost the waterproofing
Fairydown Plateau for winter
Chouinard Megamid which is my "Go-To" tent and needs to be updated. (Sticky )
Eureka Firelight for summer
Wildsports tunnel from Katmandu ( sticky)

Just remember it is all relative! Much cheaper to have multiples sets of walking gear than to own a boat, fancy car or stay in a hotel for a week a year. Have I mentioned camera buffs....

Yes ..
I had a guy commenting on another forum that I must be some sort of millionaire because I have more than one (pad/pack /tent ..can't remember what it was)
my reply was that i worked for over 30 years , don't have children, don't do drugs nor have any other vices, don't go to pubs nor chase women.
And concluded with "does this help you ?"
Never heard from the guy again.

someone commented before bushwalking isnt anywhere near as expensive as some other sports. try yachting or motor racing.....
i know someone who was racing old cars. despite free labour from mecanics and panel beaters it still cost her 8k a year, 4k alone for tyres....
most people wouldnt have 8k worth of gear and considering they are combining their holidays with their passion and that holiday is often cheaper than other ways of taking holidays....
given a lot of people change their wardrobe every season. why is it so bad to spend money regularly on tramping gear.
having lots of gear means you get to use different gear on trips and it lasts longer, so in the long run what you're spending averages out. since people with only one set of gear are going to be replacing it sooner....

hopefully this all justifies the fact i just bought my 7th day pack....

I know all my colleagues are somewhat jealous when I go OS every 2 years for a month or more walking. I point out that after the air fare it is only costing me about $20 a day including an occasional night in a hotel. $3,000 maximum. They all spend that on 2 weeks at the coast or elsewhere.

It isn't that I am always buying gear, it's just that I can't bear to sell or throw away stuff that may come in handy in the future or for a friend or mate or maybe the grand kids. Oh and the stuff found at Op-Shops for almost free ( MD summer down sleeping bag used once and $18- or the Thinsulate summer bag for $5- or the brand new Thermarest also $5-, or the CCF pad for $2- or the Macpac framed pack also only $5- and practically new) I will actually be using the framed pack this summer, much better ventilation than anything else I own and the capacity is enough for a summer trip
