TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Hilleberg Akto Question

Postby Giddy_up » Tue 04 Jun, 2013 4:19 pm

Akto's have 4 rings in each corner of the tent floor to peg the tent down.

My question is, has anyone tried to tie a guy rope to these rings and then back to a central point with the end guys. That would mean six ropes culminating at two anchor points at each end of the tent? The rope could also have a guy lock to ensure good adjustability. 4 less pegs needed to pitch the tent.

Just thinking that it would make pitching a lot easier on platforms or rocky ground as you could still make your floor taught without trying to bang in four pegs and it would be a small weight saving.

Reason I ask is I'm thinking of getting this tent and this would potentially be a way to ease the set up process in good weather or on a difficult pitch.

Cheers

If platforms or rocky ground are going to be common, why would you buy an Akto?

I'm not after a free standing tent as such. I narrowed it down to two choices really, the Akto and the Scarp 1. Both good tents with their merits, but erring on the side of the Akto.
I have an Exped Venus II which I love, just wanted a solo option that was light and a bomber I guess and and as part of my thought process I was looking at other ways to peg it out.

I tried playing around with this idea, but decided I needed to carry the pegs anyway so gave it up.
My reasons for abandoning the idea were:
1. the ideal way to use the guy ropes, ie gives the most strength in bad weather, is to have them fully extended. That means you have to pretty long cord on the floor tie out.
2. on tight spots and uneven ground you might have your guys running through/over bushes rocks etc so you might not be able to get your floor cord to reach the spot where you have pegged out your guy.
3. More fiddly to play around with cord when trying to put up tent in the wind. When I put the Akto up I peg the floor down on the end which is going to be pointing into the wind, then put the pole in, then peg out other end of the floor. Tent would fly around alot more if it was tied to a peg by a long piece of cord

Having said the above I do carry extra cord incase I cant get the peg in exactly where its needed, no room for adjustment with those rings.

I have been using an Akto for a couple of years and only had to use cord a couple of times, mainly on platforms.

So my advice is carry some cord but dont abandon those four pegs.

The worst place so far I have had to pitch the Akto

I'd prefer the Soulo in that situation.

Thanks norts, a few things there that I had not considered. Sounds like its an option on platforms when you cannot put a peg in and I do carry some extra cord so rigging up as needed would be easy.

Out of interest, what does your tent weigh with all its bits and pieces?

May I ask why you have ruled out the Scarp?

I also have the Akto foot print.
Just weighed everything in the bag, 1.9kg, that doesnt include the spare pole part or any repair kit.

I haven't. Tent buying is tantamount to torture when you can't look and feel the product and have to be guided by reviews and YouTube videos etc......

I love the whole tarptent approach and designs but I wish I could see one and sit in it here in SE QLD and view the stitching and the zippers and assess the floor but alas, apart from a Contrail that I sighted in the distance a while ago I've never seen one.

We need a Franco up north.

Thanks norts, that's a fair bit heavier than I thought it would come in at. The footprint must be very heavy as it looks like its added 300g or so. Mmmmm.
