TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Moving to WA - Bring tent or not

Mon 03 Jun, 2013 5:13 am

Hi Everyone,

Firstly id like to say hello to everyone on the site - this is my first post.

I am moving to Perth in 2 weeks from the UK. I am in the final process of sorting out all of my gear to be sent over. Im very much into my walking / trekking and currently get out often in the UK, mainly in the Lake District and Snowdonia.
I know about not bringing soil etc into the country (I will get told off by customs), all my gear has been thoroughly washed, but I was wondering if its worth me bringing my tent (its a 1 man tent - Terra Nova Lazer comp) or is it too much hassle and is worth keeping here and buying a new tent out there?

I have looked around the net a lot and ready books etc but until I've experienced it for myself I really dont know what the weather is going to be like out there. I have trekked the Northern Territory many years ago and used either a tent or a bivvy bag but again - I have no first hand experience of WA so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

G'Day and welcome to the forum.
Bring the tent, if you find it isn't suitable then you can buy another here.
Please bring some rain with you as well

I would bring the tent as well. Our walking season is more autumn, winter and spring rather than summer (hot and march flies) even in the south-west so you will need the tent. It does rain sometimes. Also check out the Perth Bushwalkers Club if that is your thing. Even if not, it is at least a way to get a feel for the walking here and low cost for a year.

Regards
Andrew

I say bring the tent over. You will likely end up buying a tent from UK or us anyway.

Or ship with here with some of your stuff

Thats great - thank you all for the warm welcome and opinions on bringing the tent.

Andrew - thanks for the link to the Perth Bushwalkers club, ive had a look around the website and will contact them when I arrive. Looks like a good organisation and will be great to meet new people and get out and explore the country.

Hi Tom

Welcome to the west. You're welcome to check out my small band of forest dwellers if you'd like to get a feel for the local bush.
It's peak walking season, it being winter and all, which means it will probably feel like summer to you.

Message me via this site for details.

Cheers,
Michael
