TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Vale the Mule

Just wondering how many other old b......s out there can remember the Mountain Mule Rucksack with it's integrated water storage in the frame. From memory I think the frame could hold about 1.5 liters. Loaded to the gills it was a pig to carry however but I am sad to say I had to pension off my old Karrimor framed pack last year. It was replaced by a Mont 65 l which has yet to be used in anger but I feel a trip to the Central Plateau/Walls area coming on soon. Framed packs certainly had a few things going for them, however comfort was not really one of them- especially for bony old shoulders.

Never had one but remember them well. I think the liquid storage was meant for fuel rather than water.

Yes, I had one and one of the local clones from Adelaide too.
Big plus they were HUGE
Minuses were everything else, the frames were simply too short to utilise a hipbelt properly for most folks

When I was kid (in the 70s) a family friend used a pack like the one you describe. I always figured it had Scotch in the metal tubing in the frame. Wouldn't have had water - not enough room to bother. Fuel does make more sense, Mark, though if I were ever to cart one of these around (god forbid), I think I'd stick with my idea.

Cadmium plated to resist rusting, drinking water [ or Scotch] would be a really bad idea
