TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Three Man Tent

Hi folks,

Just after suggestions for a 3 man hiking tent. Doesn't need to be top of the range; just a good tent to camp in the bushland around Victoria.

Appreciate your suggestions.

Quite a few, some of the better names do tend to run into a bit of money though. I would suggest the Tarptent Hogback, sleeps 4 so it will easily accommodate 3 and its priced just under $400. The other suggestion is made by the same company and is called the rain shadow 2. It is priced just under $300. Both tents are light, easy to maintain and pack.

Have a look at their web page
http://www.tarptent.com/index.html

These are probably the best value for money out there at the moment.

I recently picked up the Exped Gemini III tent (cost ~$450 with footprint). I'm yet to use it in anger (apart from embarrassing the family by living in it in the backyard when I first got it). Our first trip in it will be at the end of this month.

Even though most trips there will only be two of us, with most of the tents today not as wide as they were when I bought my previous tent (probably 15 plus years ago), I decided on a 3 person tent. Although there is a little more weight than a two person, it will hold the two of us and our gear alot more comfortably. Also on the times there will be three of us (myself and two sons under 12) we will still fit comfortably (until they are bigger and can carry more gear and then we will possibly go for two tents).

The Gemini III will just fit three full sized sleeping pads side by side (without any overlap) but has plenty of room still at the head and foot. There are also two big vestibules.

The other tent I looked most closely at was the MSR Mutha Hubba, which also looked good, but opted for the Exped Gemini because it was a newer design, slightly larger & also on special when I bought it.

There is a great review of the Gemini II with lots of pictures here (http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=10554&p=152925&hilit=exped+gemini+tent#p152925). The Gemini III is identical (except for size).

Happy hunting.

Maybe be a bit more specific with the kind of things you want in a tent and forum members will be able to steer you in the right direction.
Are you concerned about weight or can you carry a bit more?
Are expecting to encounter snow?
Are you a fan of tunnel or dome tents?
Lots of advice ready to flow but need more info to start with I think

+1 on the Exped Gemini III. An extremely well designed unit for not too much additional weight than those UL units. The extra functional and comfort features are desirable for family application.
Just move it!

If you actually want to fit three regular sized adults in it for any extended period you may want to consider a 4-man. Maybe a Tarptent Hogback.
