TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Half bag

Well I wasn't going to spend any money or buy any more gear but i just bought myself a Western mountaineering "Tamarack" because
1 I needed a new survival bag for ski touring
2 It was only $219-
Any body here got one and used one in cold weather so I can get an idea or how far I could push this thing in winter??
Truth is I think it may be far too warm to use with my existing winter bag but may work out well with my lighter Thinsulate one

Well I just bit the bullet and put that WM Tamarack on Lay-By. $219- was; I thought; a decent price and I really did not want to cut down one of my Ultra bags.
So now I'm wondering if the combination will be too warm LOL

It does mean that a new lightweight summer bag is on hold again, for another year at least.

Cut down your Ultra - Sacrilege !!!

Dunno about being too warm, but I have dabbled briefly with the two bag setup many years ago and it was super cosy.

Your setup of the Tamarack inside the Ultra will, I think, be somewhat more effective than my setup and will, almost certainly, be very warm !!

Sounds like a great setup for winter snow camping !!

It was nothing well thought out Moondog.

If I recall correctly one part was an Arthur Ellis hooded mummy and the other was another Ellis bag but with no hood. Can't remember what went inside what, but it was in response to a particularly evil bout of weather which saw around 6 -12 " of snow in camp overnight. Lost the feeling in my heels (not in bed) which was a bit weird. Because the bags weren't designed to go inside each other, it was rather restrictive.

Anyway - it was super warm, and used in a vehicle based base camp. Not that practical to carry around, as those two bags would take up most of the space in the average pack.

I lusted after one of those O/P Ultras when they were available but could never quite bring myself to splash the cash.

Do you still lust after one> I happen to have a second bag and willing to part with it to fund a summer bag.
Arthur Ellis did do a double bag in the 60s, one with a hood and the inner without but as you say too heavy and bulky for rucksack carry.

Excellent memory Moondog ! No, I didn't have the factory designed two bag system. That was (as you know) cut and sized to work together. I just improvised with what was to hand.

Thank you for your kind offer but I also suffer from the same disease as yourself. It was diagnosed by an expert on the problem as GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I believe the disease incubates and procreates with high levels of effectiveness on this forum.

I'ves tarted a course of medication and therapy to try and rid myself of the dreaded GAS and so far it seems to have worked for my vinyl collection, I only bought 3 records last month.
The trouble with the Ultra bag is that it was always meant to be used as part of a system and when used on its own there is a lot of empty space that needs to be warmed up before the bag really starts to loft.
The closest modern equivalent is the PHD Combi bag

http://www.phdesigns.co.uk/product_info ... cts_id=217

Only good to -5C and that is assuming wearing a cap and warm underwear and using a bivvy bag and/or tent, I have always believed that is not enough margin for error in our winters and think you need a bag good to -18C

Which is why I was and am looking at the half bag, the one I sold to was far too warm, it was good to -12 on its own

Well I have had a good look at the Tamarack, it comes up to my armpits and is very warm, in fact it may well be too warm to use a liner for my Ultra and i think it is going to much warmer than the temperature rating given it by WM. For my usage it would also be much much better without the zip. If it goes in my day pack as my "Just-in-case" survival bag I will need to make a new LW goretex ( or equivalent) bivvy as my current one is now looking like the dinosaur it is.
I wrote to WM last month giving my thoughts and asking for their advice but so far I haven't got a reply.
This unit may well be for sale after winter but I won't know until I've given it a real work-out

Adding extra information here as well, the Tamarack will fit into my lightweight summer SB with room to spare so that adds another option to my choice of gear
