This thread prompted me to drag out my old sleeping bags (purchased 1978).
At 2kg, they are only used for car-camping now. Still in very good nick (had them cleaned by Remote Equipment Repairs in Melbourne some years ago) but they are very bulky. I can't believe I carried this bag on multi-day xc ski camping trips (along with heavy woollen clothing, japara jacket and o'pants and mess tins for cooking !) all in a Lowe Alpine backpack (long ago replaced by an Aarn pack).
The sleeping bag is a Relaxabout (Aust) brand with 2.5lb (1.2kg approx) duck down and seriously warm (my current bag is 900g and OK for me down to -5deg, with clothing). I've no idea what the temp rating of the old bag might have been at time of purchase (and no data on the net) but it's only in the last 10 years that any attempt at standardisation (eg EN13537) has been made. Even now, at best, temp ratings are a vague guide only.
