Your must have item for overnighters...

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Your must have item for overnighters...

Postby stepbystep » Tue 06 Oct, 2009 5:48 pm

Hi All,

I am putting together a kit for my first tent based overnighters in Tassie, and am interested in all the incidentals, the things I might not think about until I'm in camp.
Now apart from all the obvious stuff, tents, mat, sleeping bag, cooking gear, food etc.

What is the one item(and why) do you take it on every trip?

Thanks :D

Going back to post number 107 on the forum, you may find this topic has all the answers.
These days I use a spreadsheet with tick boxes down the side. So I check off the items I think I will need on each walk, whether it's a day walk or an overnighter.

Bear in mind I walk with my wife so some items here may not be relevant...
Picking a single must-have item, hard to do, but you are welcome to peruse my full list and see if there's anything that grabs your attention.
Note, the wine bladder isn't on the list, and I have a separate list for food. Licence, credit card, and a little cash normally get put in as well - mainly for the trip home.

I'll list three which I have kicked myself for forgetting at some point or other:
1. spoon/fork/spork. I'll never forget that trip.
2. Neoprene socks. I always get wet boots (wading / fishing), and when pack space is tight, one pr of boots may gets the chop. At camp at night, I can live with slightly cold feet, but very cold, wet feet is very uncomfortable.
3. Spare lighter/matches. I have only once had my only MOI crap out on me without backup. Never again!

Well that was thorough, I only asked for one item, but I get your point, I see there's plenty of info already on the forum, thanks Adam :D
