10 uses of hiking socks

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Getting pretty creative and desperate. Anyone with more?

I mostly use mine to protect my feet.
They go over my foot and then inside my boots.

Franco, I am concerned of your creativity. ;)

So how do you use your socks out side of 'mostly'?

I have used them as mittens and "oven gloves"

I'm just in a silly mood today ; most if not all of those suggestions are pretty good.
I have seen several times folk talking about cold feet inside a sleeping bag yet they probably had stuff sacks or plastic bags less than a meter away, so sometime it is good to make these kind of alternative uses a bit more obvious.

The only one I didn't get out of that 10 was wearing socks over one's boots to increase traction on ice. It'll get holed in minutes.

Otherwise it reminded me of the movie 'Saving Private Ryan' where Capt Miller instructed on the use of socks to make sticky bombs.

I like the response to the article:

'Have you actually tried any of these ideas out? E.g. hunted small game with your weaponized sock?'

Some of these ideas seem a bit far fetched to say the least. I can think of other items of clothing I'd chose to filter my water, than my stinky socks. Even if I managed to approach some unsuspecting an animal with my weaponized sock i doubt I'd be able to bring myself to use it. I have used spare socks as mittens on one occasion though.

You weren't hungry enough. But agree that using socks as water filter is not ideal as they aren't fine enough to filter the fine silt out.

You're right if my life depended on it I could probably kill something. The problem is in that situation I probably wouldn't get close enough, since it's usually things like possums trying to steal my food that I get up close and personal with.

Once in the Alps when I forgot sunscreen I used a CHEAP (read NOT 'Hiking' socks) pair - cutting a thumb hole in the side and opening the front for my fingers.
In fact on my last Kozsci walk even sunscreen didn't cut it and I cut the sleeves of my lycra undershirt off at the elbows and cut makeshift thumb-holes in order to wear them as long arm-gloves.
Still use them.
Expensive hiking socks I use for hiking... ;-)
