TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

4 season lightweight tent

Mon 20 May, 2019 7:11 pm

Hi all,
I’m currently using a Nemo Hornet 2p but need one suitable for winter snow camping (Australian Alps type weather at this stage, but always prefer to be overprepared!). Does not need to be freestanding.
I am a smallish female so weight is a big priority and I sleep cold. Price is less important.. Budget around $1000, or realistically do I need to be looking at $1500?

Any suggestions? There are so many options my head is spinning and I’m not yet experienced enough sleeping out in poor weather to have strong preferences for certain designs.

Do you need it to be double skin or would single skin plus bivvy work for you?
Solo or sharing?
I can't advise as I've not bought a tent for over a decade but I use a Macpac Minaret for my solo tent, others use much lighter tents

Never considered an alternative but I think I would prefer a double skin. Solo and no future plans to share (ha!) but given it’s for winter use, would like space to keep my gear inside overnight.

Some recent ideas here. Proper four season capable and 'lightweight' might be problematic.

The WE Second Arrow looks pretty sweet and ticks my requirements, in fact it almost looks too good to be true for that price. I’ll have to get to the stores to have a look at it in person.
Cheers!

Second Arrow is on my "want" list - just waiting to scrounge up that much spare $$$. It's a damn good tent and rock solid when properly pitched. May need a groundsheet as some people think the floor on the updated one is a bit flimsy.

I have a second arrow I've been meaning to put on the buy swap sell. Been used once, over night, in the most benign of conditions. I purchased new from camp hike climb in Hornsby. If you'd like a as new one cheaper, send me a PM. I'm only selling as I'm just not doing 4 season stuff these days and my boys are now joining me on walks, so I need to get a 4 person for the family.
Cheers,
Mic

Took the tent for it’s first night out with me and had the full gamut of alpine conditions.. 4h of rain, strong winds all night and snow early morning. I chose a very exposed area to set up as I need to fine-tune my sleep system in preparation for an upcoming winter trip. Tent is sensational and very roomy, now I just need to read proper setup instructions rather than wing it
Thanks all for the suggestion and Bluegum for the tent!

My pleasure. Good to see it out in it's element.

And sorry all. I'd been considering giving it a new home, but hadn't got around to it.

Warin, not sure if that question is for me, but I only have 3 tents now. A huge family camping tent that weighs a tonne, a nemo pentalite for family walks, and an x-mid for the rarest of occasions that my 5 year old might let me out of his sight for an overnighter lol. I still have my hammock n tarp too, but those adventures might resume when the kiddlets are a little older ;-) in the mean time it's a novelty to take for a break stop relax on a family walk :-)
