TIP: The online
Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

I've got some old Scarpas that I've had for 20 years and they are still great- but they are overkill for most of my trips (NSW).
I'm interested in some mid shoes pref with eVent or Goretex lining for the morning dew and mud etc.
After a few weeks and trying a few on I am leaning towards these from Merrell- they seem the 'breathiest' so far, but the pair I tried on had loose lining so worried about wear/rubbing after a few good walks.

Can anyone throw some more options in the mix? Thanks
Robert

Yes. If you forget the membrane, the shoe will be a LOT more breathable, but your feet will get wet. They will also dry out fast. Thats the big problem with membranes in footwear, once the wet is inside, it can't escape very easily, so they can stay wet for days. Low footwear tends to get overcome by water more readily, which exacerbates the problem.
I've been hiking in some Inov8 Roclite 330's over summer, apart from the lightness, the biggest thing I notice going back into boots is the heat, so something like that might be worth considering.

I have been walking in a pair of Garmont mids of late.
http://www.garmontusa.com/881005211.htmlThey are the mid version of one of their shoes. Comfy, suitable for relatively fast moving, waterproof. A good option if you don't want something as low as a shoe but want something lighter and less rigid than a boot. Obviously don't expect to get anything like the long life which you have had from your Scarpa boots out of them.
I tend to go through a pair of running shoes every 10-12 weeks so even a year or so out of a pair of walking shoes seems fantastic to me.
