TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Log book container

Mon 10 Mar, 2025 10:35 am

I am preparing a place so that campers can stay at it in a region frequented by a lot of bushwalkers, and I want to have a logbook, clipboard and instructions available. For some reason I'm somewhat set on the idea of having a similar container to the ones log books are found in, in places like Federation Hut. I already have a great place to put this kind of steel container, but I haven't been able to find one for sale in the places I know to search.

This might not exactly be a regular piece of bushwalking equipment, but I figure this is the place to ask since it's something many of you will be quite familiar with. Where would I find something like this?

Perhaps a wall mounted first aid box?
But let me have a look in my stash as I may have something in aluminium if you didn't mind sealing the cable entry holes.

Aluminium
810mm high
270mm wide
110mm deep
Would still need a shroud as it isn't a weatherproof box but big enough to take a large folder or book with room for some emergency supplies if you added a shelf or two
Surplus to our own requirements after the new solar installation and rewiring the shed
PM my if interested, box $20- but postage a killer probably

Have a search for Emergency Information Box, brings up a few options that might work.
Noting they would also benefit from a shroud to protect them from wind driven weather.
There is also a range of weatherproof outdoor electrical enclosures, but they may exceed you budget : )

Wazza.

Inside a hut or out in the elements will be the biggest factor in determining what you want. Plenty of things like plastic hard cases that are waterproof.

Old ammunition boxes have been used for storing logbooks on various mountain tops. Have a look on ebay.

Thinking about this a bit more and those big plastic drums that food come in would work when laid horizontally; so long as you didn't lose the screw on lid
