TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Aldi cook-set review

$19- how good could it be?
Very good
But I only bought it for the kettle and the rest of the kit is up for grabs
Unfortunately the frypan doesn't fit on the outside of my MSR Alpine set.
I'll list these in the relevant section if there is any interest and I'll be happy to break it up as well; otherwise I'll put the bits in the picnic kit that lives in the cars
I'm keeping the mesh bag. The big pot would cook for a small group, 4 to 6 people and the middle pot is a good size for a couple and 3 or 4 eggs would fit the fry pan nicely.
I'd say a great value beginners starter set even at the original selling price of $25-; you don't have to carry all of the pots so while it is heavier than other pot sets the weight is reasonable and looks very robust. I have a similar small pot and after 8 years still as good as new inside and out so I expect these to offer similar performance

I saw these on sale at Aldi the other day, and they looked extremely good value. But I am sorted with my current anodised alu pot at the moment.

Out of curiousity, what do these weigh Moondog?

I'm tempted, how heavy are they?

Full set + mesh bag - 900g

I usually just take the kettle and the small pot which is 400g

They seem like very good value for the money

The only con I have is the kettle is a tad small, although it does make two cups of coffee

They look just as heavy as my current multi-person pot, I was hoping they'd be lighter. Thanks for the offer though.

Yep bought this last year and happy user. I normally just bring the kettle and small pot bushwalking but the frypan I use for.cooking when family car camping too. For the price they are well worth it. That kettle can take some punishment too. Outlasted 2 of my brothers fancier ones

I got the kettle because I read somewhere about the Trangia kettle boiling water faster than the billy, so as to maximise my skiing time I will use this for the brew-ups. I priced the Trangia kettle locally and the cheapest I could find was $30-

Kettles are great ! I have the big Trangia,(might actually have two if I were to check  ) and use it for car based camps. It's not heavy and super efficient, but my MSR Titan is lighter for walking.

I had to get the scales from the kitchen
Aldi 500ml kettle 105gms
MSR 800ml Titanium 105gms
MSR Alpine cook set in S/S with grippers 600gms

Of course either of the smaller ones will fit inside the Alpine cook set to cater for an extra person or to eat from and no need then to take the plastic bowl.

That Aldi kettle is surprisingly light MD. Pretty small- I think the Trangia that I have is 900, although I am aware that Trangia do make smaller ones.

Not that good walking wise for me, regardless, as I am a one pot does all walker and I think I would have trouble getting the back country or the porridge out of a kettle

I've got to say that at $13 the sets appear to be a real bargain, even if only for the car, in my case.

I just found out that the frypan from this set fits perfectly on the bottom of the MSR Alpine large cook pot.
seeing as how I really like my grilled cheese sandwiches and the occasional omelet I think I'll keep it there

Just a heads up it appears another hiking sale next saturday. The merino thermals might be alright and they have a cookset which looks good, definatly different to mine as its more compact (looks like it fits gas canister.exactly) and comes with a stove for $30. Anyway will check it out next week

no MD not that I could see. it specifically mentioned gas does NOT come with the cookset pictured, given I cant see an individual listing I guess probably not.
Also just note the down jackets in there for $60 are exactly the same as last years $50 (which are good but they dont compress very well for packing)

Just as well I have the Pocket Rocket already, I do not need any more cooking gear. In fact i should probably sell or giveaway a good bit of what I already have now my kids aren't using it.
I haven't got the catalogue; what sort of stove is it ? IE does it take the long cheap gas or the dear squat gas

Maybe its just me, but I wouldn't want to be any number of days walk from the nearest road wearing what are essentially supermarket boots.

For casual wear though, go for it. They're cheap.

Well I picked one of the cooksets up. Its not bad really, well constructed and light (not sure the weight I dont have scales).
The stove is a bit meh, oversized for the pots but solid constructiom, although ill probably use my smaller lighter one from dx. Overall not bad.
Bought a merino polo too while there, not sure of how it compares to others but its decent

Cook set weighs 331gm that includes burner, 500ml and 950ml pots with handles.

Burner, 126gm
950ml pot, 126grams
500ml pot, 79grams
Both stuff sacks are an extra 20gm

For $30 I think it's extremely good value. The burner, with an igniter, is probably oversized for this set. Though for me that's a good thing as it makes it more versatile. I've only got the small gas bottles at home but I'd say the lot goes together with a larger gas bottle inside to make a tidy compact unit.
