Hilleberg Akto (Solo tents for the taller people)

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

You bet I am hoping :D Planning a bit more light weight next time and brought on Ebay one of those nifty Optimus Crux stoves as well. Also brought from the Bush Hut the mosquito sting zappers as they are a Pizeo device to light it. Tried one on another gas stove and it worked. (Box of matches will be taken as backup in case plastic does not play well with the heat).

Cheers Brett

Gees,
I should be asking Optimus for a spotters fee what with me ,pomisi, and you all proud owners ,you do realise of course that I may need to get the new model like you two
What you need now is the Brunton Stove Stand just like the one I have so you can use the Crux with a windscreen if required

Velcro on the mesh rather than a zip sounds good must save weight I think.

Time for a thread bump ;)

Don't know whether you've put the Akto through its paces yet Brett, but some reviews I've read have mentioned ventilation issues - just wondering whether you (and any other Akto users on the forum) have any strong feelings on whether this is a real issue with the tent?

Havent had any problems either with them. They are quite roomy for the weight. I imagine, given the right conditions, that they may have some condensation, no worse than any other solo tent. About the only downside with them is that they could have done with the leg end peaked (perhaps a third foot pole (as has been mentioned). We have had them in snow and they wouldnt hold a big dump back. I guess at least it would be the foot end that collapsed first, giving you notice rather than suffocating you.

Good report Brett,

Always good to see a tent in actual use, especially in challenging circumstances. Looks like the Atko held up admirably.

You had to cook in the tent? What fire/ventilation precautions do you take? I imagine that if the flames got into the tent it'd be gone in a flash...

Thanks for the terrific review Brett; I've been vacillating between the Akto and Vango Helium 100 or 200... definitely starting to lean toward spending an extra $200 or so to get something I'll still be using in 20 years rather than something 'cheap' that is a bit of an unknown quantity though!

Hey I'm back home. That means you can test this now :). Oh, wait a minute...

Rain periods about the north and west with isolated thunderstorms...

Outlook for Saturday :

Outlook for Sunday :

Outlook for Monday :

See, it's not me causing it

Back on topic, it looks like a very thoughtfully designed tent with plenty of room. Wish I could afford one :(. About cooking inside, in general. Wilderness Equipment also make similar comments but I'm too terrified of the conseqences if something went wrong to try it in the 2nd Arrow. Would need to be really extreme conditions before I'd consider it. As an alternative I've cooked in the rain using 2 tarp ponchos set up as an A frame using some cord and a couple of well placed small trees. Positioned to deflect the wind etc, so wasn't too uncomfortable. At least if that went up the tent is still there.
