Cuben Fiber Tent

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Ahermm..

That's why, with snow, you plan an extra day or two between the end of the walk and your return flight, even in summer (that deep you would be fine, if your worried just wait for the less patient to leave in the morning before you).

Oookworks is just back on the net this week and I have actually had an email from Sean, so shouldn't be long before you hear back. He must have a monster backlog, maybe cut him some slack?

If it comes down to price, sure the MLD inner is cheaper, but the design is not as flexible. That custom Oookworks inner at blogpackinglight would be at least double the price of the MLD solo innernet. I think I'd be happier with the partial cuben sides to block the breeze than the full net MLD jobbie.

If you want fast, then Bearpaw would be the fastest source I think, and priced between MLD and Oookworks.

Oookworks only got broadband connected a few days ago at his new place. I believe he has had very limited access to emails for the past few months since moving, so it might take a little while to get a reply.

I read on Oookworks somewhere that they have a waiting list of 8 weeks. My duomid is 9 weeks, so this will work out perfectly for me. I will wait to hear from Sean.

Hey Phil, I am interested to know why you opted for a cuben Duomid with a inner over something like a Hexamid?
I have always been tossing up between the two but keep falling on the side of the Hexamid.

I had decided to go for the Oookworks inner for my DuoMid, but I still have not received a response from them to any of my emails after such a long wait, I'm now not so sure I will take this path.
It's almost two weeks ago I asked for a quote.

I don't think the Hexamid will work for me in my climate. Wind driven rain, we can get rain that comes in sideways. The duomid to me looks to be better coverage, and I much prefer the heavier cuben that MLD uses on there shelters, I also prefer the colour.

Fair enough. Zpacks can do .74 for $25 from memory. They also offer blue, green and white so not sure what you mean regarding colours
But yeah I too am stupidly tempted by a Duomid after seeing the workmanship of MLD. I am sure you will be a happy man when it arrives.

DuoMid ordered. :D Now the long wait. :( . It will be worth it in the end.

Now if I could only order a custom Oookworks Inner for my Duomid, I would be very happy, I'm still waiting on a response to my emails I sent for an order 2 weeks ago.

Not sure what to do in regards to the inner. I'll give them a couple more weeks. If I don't hear back in that time, I might look at BearPaw for an inner for my DuoMid.

I have a cuben single inner for the DuoMid from BearPawd and it is very good. Got it made for my specifications, 10 inch cuben coming up 3 of the sides (I think I sent you a couple of pictures of it)

hi, I don't recall seeing those images. Could you send them again? Whats the weight of the inner?
I think this will be the option I will take in getting bearpawd to build a inner. Did you get Bearpawd to custom build the inner? I don't see any listed on his website for the DuoMid.

Im pretty sure its just the pyranet 1 Phil that fits the duomid. From memory no mod is needed to fit thought he does do a mod for them to fit a hexamid/SL3 etc

I've been avoiding this thread for weeks as my head near exploded with the 'amids' and .74's and so on.

But given that I need to get my shelter weight down I've finally spent the last couple of days taking my time going through this thread (and your BPL one), checking out the manufacturer sites etc... and I'm finally coming to grips with it all.

So... If there's one thing you can take out all the headaches you've had Phil, it's that you've helped me get up to speed on it all, so thanks for your efforts and constant communication.

Good luck with the duomid, it's what I've had my eye on, so I can't wait to hear how you go.

Things are looking pretty good. I was emailed last night from someone over in Europe offering me there Oookwork Inner, it's a 2012 model only used a few times, saved 20% on a brand new price includes shipping and insurance. It's the one on the Oookwork website for the DuoMid with the Chikara floor listed at 160.00 pounds. Weight is a little heavier than I would have liked, was wanting to get something in the 300 gram range the inner I just purchased is 380 grams. I'm not going to loose any sleep over 80 grams. 80 grams will not break my back. Should be here within a couple of weeks.

Just waiting on the DuoMid. That's going to be a long wait. I think all up, I'm going to have a pretty good sturdy shelter, easy to pitch and quick to pitch for well under a kilo. I'm happy about that.

What I particularly liked about the Oookwork Inners was the upside down T shaped door zippers, as shown in the following image. Who ever I was going to get to build my inner I was going to ask for this type of door on the inner. I didn't like the rounded zipper covering only half the front of the shelter. I like to really open up the shelter with great views on those perfect days or nights.

The quality of the workmanship on the seams and the build quality are very high on the Oookworks. Just a shame Sean the maker is no where to be seen or heard from. I don't need to worry about that anymore. :D

That's a stroke of luck Phillip, about time you had a win with this tent saga!

Agree about the inverted T zip. I'm guessing your inner has ripstop walls instead of cuben. That's not so bad, I've gone for cuben sides and ripstop ends since hearing about some condensation issues with the foot end on the cuben, as ripstop breathes better.

My Inner should look like this, (imagine it under a TrailStar):

Sean has been quiet lately, but I did hear from him before the Christmas break. I expect he is hard at work trying to clear his backlog...

Hi Photohiker,
I was going to order that inner you have in the image. Planned to have partial cuben. In the end I'm happy with my purchase, saved a few dollars and a lot quicker turn a round.

The guy selling me the inner, told me that it was 5 degrees Celsius out side shelter and 9 degrees Celsius inside the inner and never had issues with condensation getting inside the inner because it's highly breathable. My Hilleberg tent was like that. Used to wake up with lot's of condensation on the outer but dry inner because of it's breathability. But if the inner touched the outer that was a different story. Wet. I had this problem with the foot end of my Hilleberg Tent as it was slanted down on one end and the outer would touch the inner.

I only wish all camp sites where nicely grassed like that, It's rare I get to pitch shelter in such a place, this is where my hammock is ahead in leaps and bounds, so long there's tree's about.

Trailstar turned up today!

Ordered 28/11/12 arrived 14/1/13. Bit less than 7 weeks including post time.

If your Duomid takes the same time, you should have it mid Feb.

that would be great if it does turn up mid Feb, but I dont have my hopes high for that to happen, ETA is last week in March.

Any day now my Oookworks inner will turn up in the post. Im lucky I picked up this inner when I did. I heard Oookworks owner is having some personal issues and on top of that, he cant get internet where he lives and his going to increase the price of all his inners by a considerable amount. I believe he is also inundated with back orders. I still have not heard from him in regards to my order I was going to place with him apx 4 weeks ago.

Hi Phillip,

I think my ETA was mid Feb, so it has come a month early. Ron must have hired extra leprechauns to cater for the rush. :D

Sean has explained his situation on his Oookworks blog Sure, he's been through some tough times of late.

He has internet now, the communication problem he has is with his mobile phone not having reception where he is, and no landline.

Order books are full, but he is finding he isn't making money. The options are to shut the operation and go find a job or put the price up. All sounds reasonable to me. Its a quality product.

I'm chopping up some guys so I can pitch the TrailStar.

share some images of your trailstar. Did the lines come with the shelter?
Im hopeful Ron includes lines, as I cant get any decent lines where I live.

I can imagine the time Sean puts into the making of each inner he makes. His a perfectionist. I cant wait till my inner turns up in the post, it will be here within the week. I could use it in a GoLite Shangri-La 3 I just purchased of Bluegum Mic, its a nice shelter, has the floor sewn in, will need to do some tests to see how that works for me, thinking about cutting the floor out so I can utilize the Oookworks Inner in the Shangri-La. I read on a European forum that the GoLite flooring leaks.

Well, apart from having to hammer the pegs into the ground here at the moment, it's pretty easy to set up. I'll get better at it after a few practice runs but I just wanted to test it out and seam seal it today.

Image

Image

Dry, aint it? :D

Colour is 'Olive Brown' Quite like it, I've gotten a bit tired of grey.

All seam sealed now, and drying. I use the Permatex flowable windhield sealant (via ebay) and a small kids art brush. Only downside is that it dries glossy, but the consistency is great and it is easy to apply without stinking the joint out as I have in the past with diluted silicone.

Yes, Phil, it came with some 3mm guy rope - 40 feet of the stuff. Cut lengths according to Colin Ibbotson's suggestions, Got a fair bit left over.

Colin has been riding/hiking around Tasmania, since before christmas by the way.

Duomid comes with the same stuff I think.

Nice shelter. I read some excellent reviews on that shelter in regards to storm worthiness. Im glad the guy-lines are supplied. MLD are introducing a smaller version of the trailstar.

The grass is just as dry up here.

It curiously switches from a dark green/brown colour to the brown you see here based on the quality of light.
