Enlightened Equipment Quilts

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

I.dont compress it at home. I keep it in the large sack it came with (same with jackets which are hung etc). As a matter of practicality though when walking gotta be done

And I'm the same. I store them hanging in their own cupboard at home but compress on the trail. They always spring back to life. When hammocking I'll actually put both underquilt and top quilt in the big agnes stuff sack together.

Not here. I hang them at home, and don't put them in a compression sack on the trail. It's one of the last things to go into the top of the pack's drybag, minimising compression. It takes up all of the remaining available space.

Tent and waterproofs are always at the top of my pack. The things you're most likely to want in hurry are the things that have to be most accessible, in my book.

Shelter and waterproofs are in the outside pockets of my pack. I don't put anything wet or potentially wet inside the pack. Anything I might need in a hurry likewise, toilet gear, snacks etc all outside, I rarely need to open the main section before camp.

Tasmanian scrub and outside attachment of essential gear do not go together.
I have drybags for the stuff that has to stay dry and if something's wet it goes inside the pack but outside the liners. The pack exists to protect the gear as well as carry it. Plus it's a neater package that way.
Well, whatever works for you.

Outside pockets, not outside attachment.

I pack it loose as possible to maintain loft.

I find it hard to get everything into the smaller packs I'm using now if I don't compress it well. Pulling it out of the stuff sack is one of the first things I do once i've set my tent up. Never had a problem with any bag or quilt not floofing properly.

I was surprised at the large size of the stuff sack provided for the EE quilt, so asked them if there was any reason for not compressing it as usual in my pack - i wondered if the Down Tek was any different. Their response was:

"Nope, no damage done by going with a smaller sack, or even a true compression sack. Our stuff sacks are slightly oversized by design so that it’s easy to get the quilt into them."

Enlightened Equipment Quilts

Postby hobbitle » Sun 12 Apr, 2015 11:21 am

I have been putting my down One Planet bag in a compression sack or stuff sack for 10 years (though I do try to hang it when not in use but it has been in a sack for months in the past) and it's as lofty as ever.

My EE Quilt always goes at the bottom of my pack as I never need it on the trail and only at night.

After seeing how down is transported I don't really have an issue with compressing down into my pack. Though I will hang all my down products when not in use

My take is that it's fine to compress down as much as you need for packing, but at the same time I compress it right down only if I'm really tight for space. It just takes longer to re-loft the more compressed it is. I generally use a stuff sack that's a little large for my quilt with the theory that the shape of the stuff sack is more pliable and can be squished into gaps in your pack easier than the more balloon like shape of a tightly packed stuff sack/compression sack. Otherwise I use a dry-bag with a valve to release the air out of it. I store down gear uncompressed

Another factor is that simple stuff sacks are generally lighter than compression sacks so if you count grams consider getting or making a stuff sack/dry bag that is sized the way you like rather than relying on compression straps. It doesn't really make sense to use a 60g compression sack to compress a 400g quilt

Still makes more sense than a 60g sack for a 1500g sleeping bag.

The 1500g sleeping bags probably come with 200g compression sacks ;) Seriously though you can have an appropriately sized stuff sack for 10-15g and it might take you a few seconds more to get the quilt in but then maybe not by the time you're finished fiddling with the compression straps.

No compression straps on my Exoed dry bag. An extra few grams to protect your most important source of warmth is worth it IMO.

I'm happy with the small compression sack that came with my EE quilt. Seems to the job when carrying it in my backpack, where it lives at the bottom.

Hey weeds

Here is a link to the pad straps which essentially keep your pad and quilt more closely attached - http://www.enlightenedequipment.com/blog/quilts-102-pad-straps/

Weather strips?? Not sure what that refers to perhaps just the more water resistant fabric option.
