TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

So who are the major users of the 50k series?

Probably, same as the 1:25,000 series, given that they have archived the former and are now only publishing their new 1:50,000 series. That's the lighthearted answer GPSGuided. The frank answer is: I don't know. TASMAP would have a fair idea, of course. The manager that I spoke with said that 20 years ago, TASMAP had some 60 on the staff, now they have 4. There's the answer: no resources to keep a 1:25,000 topographical series up to date, even if they wanted to. Fortunately, mountains rarely move, so the old 1:25,000 topographical series is fine, especially for off-track walking.

60 to 4 staffs is very drastic. But I do like TASMAP's plastic waterproof maps. Very useful and much better than their NSW counterpart.

Hi everyone,

I am a bit surprised no one has suggested the Alocksak ones. Just like an industrial zip lock bag and they handle the roll or fold fairly well.

In regards to the map proofing thing, I recently sprung for Memory Map and did the Kanagra to Katoomba walk. I was able to print the exact route in A3 on waterproof/ tear proof paper from Officeworks. $1.50 a sheet printed and it worked great. The maps were strong, I had no worry about wetting them but of course there was a downside. The folding of them.

They creased quite dramatically once folded and it was hard to unfold or re-fold and if you consider I chose to print double sided to cut the number of sheets from 5 to 3 it was a little uncomfortable at times.

Also the stock that Officeworks had was quite shiny and the contours were a little washed out because of the gloss. Not noticeable so much at home, but on the track with the sun much more annoying.

So my 2 cents, if you print on waterproof paper try to get matte not gloss. Double sided printing is good for weight but annoying on waterproof paper. Make sure you have all the settings correct on Memory Map or you may have to re print to get rid of datum lines you don't want.

DAndy, where did you source your Aloksaks? I tried looking for some a long while back but didn't have much luck.

Has anybody ever tried to print maps onto silk fabric. I know it was done for special forces soldiers etc because they where light weight, easy to conceal and carry and waterproof.

Here is another great solution. This is definitely worth a try.
