BIG 4

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Great thread! Good to see what people are using

Typical set up.. give and take a change in tents..
Tent: Wilderness Equipment Tectite 2 (flavour of the month)
Bag: Macpac Latitude 700 (Old Faithful)
Pack: Macpac Traverse (Tough as Guts)
Pad: Exped Downmat (mmmm noice) 8)

Lighter set-up
Tent: MSR Hubba (love it to bits)
Bag: Macpac Latitude 700 (Old Faithful goes everywhere)
Pack: Macpac Ascent (indestructible old friend)
Pad: Thermarest Prolite (can’t kill it)

Kayaking set-up
Not much changes except the choice of tent..bigger, with more room.
And an STS Ultra-Sil tiny backpack thingy for slogging up that mountain you’ve paddled to :)
Cheers Cyn

WOW thanks for the responses guys- we are a bunch of gear freaks aren't we! Nice to see some of the old faithfuls still kicking about too.
Just got my nest in the post this morning for the Shangri-la 5 so will be interesting to see how it compares with our last-minute homemade version.... it is lighter anyway :)
cheers

Yeah? But I don't think the Akto really meets my demands. I don't want a tent that requires maintenance (bumping off snow) all through the night during heavy snowfall - that's why I sold my last single person tent. :-(

I'm glad you like it. I still think the vestibule is too small.
I'm still to actually camp in mine. Was going to last weekend, but then I had to work. And the car's in for a service this coming Saturday, so that just leaves me one weekend before I hit Tassie, so I might not get the chance to actually use it in earnest until I'm down there.

Current big four

Tent: BlackWolf Hornet
Pack: Outer Limits Highland 60L (every walk I swear I'll upgrade to a better pack and then I get home and remember the good times and not the scars)
Bag: Macpac Sanctuary 600 (or a lighter synthetic bag when appropriate)
Mat: Mountain Designs 3/4L

Both tent and pack have gotten by with minor repairs but are on the upgrade list

P- Macpac Cascade: 3kg
T- Macpac Microlight: 2kg
B- OP Bushlight Super: 2kg
M- Thermarest thin 3/4: 415gms (fits snuggly into a Sea2Summit XXS string pull storage sack.)
(..and a Pocket Rocket, in a pear tree.)

The Cascade is indeed pretty bombproof but the sail repair guy in Hobart has noted from his repairs experience (and it's my and other's too), that the rigid plastic strip supporting the waist harness, eventually eats through the Cordura(?), lower corner/s of the pack.

This is my "before" list:

Tent: Kathmandu North Star (~2.5Kg)
Bag: Kathmandu Navigator ~1.5Kg)
Pack: Kathmandu Vardo (~3.5Kg with footprint)
Mat: Kathmandu full-length self-inflating mat
and adding a cheeky 5th item...
Stove: Trangia 27-5 UL

My "after" kit:
Tent - Tarptent Scarp 1 (arrived on Monday! :D )
Pack: ???
Bag: ???
Mat: Kathmandu 1/2-length self-inflating mat
Stove: Trangia burner with Macguivered pot stand (to be replaced with a pepsi-can stove); Fairydown 850ml aluminium pot

The weight is coming down, slowly...

Tent: Tarptent Scarp 2, or Mont Moondance II (more rugged than the Tarptent,) or an old Lightwave Cylq 1 with massive vestibule for wet weather.
Pack: MacPac Cascade 75
Bag: MacPac Latitude 700g or a One Planet 5C bag, depending on conditions
Mat: Exped Synmat 7 (with integrated pump - very comfortable and warm)

Have just spent a week travelling/walking/camping - currently washing and drying all the gear on a sunny Sydney day.

Cheers,

Thanks Franco. I didn't like the pump when they first came out, but might be worth another look.

wT,

The pump's fairly easy to use - takes about 90 seconds or so to inflate a mat once you get the hang of it.

TENT - Salewa Sierra - Way too heavy (4 kg+) but bomb proof & roomy
PACK - Osprey Aether 70
BAG - MontBell UL Alpine #1
MAT - Therm a Rest Prolite

Trying to persude the GF to upgrade to a lighter tent but she prefers the solidness and room of the Sierra AND she doesn't have to carry it
Still manage a 4 day hike with my pack @ 17kg & hers @ 14kg (inc 1 ltr of water each)
