Pack - One Planet McMillan 90 litre (now that's a pack).

I've also bought the "Fire Maple" titanium copy of the Snow Peak crab stove. Really well made and better than the original - who'd have thought. Cookset is an MSR Ti cookset with an Evernew 0.9 litre Ti kettle - the extended rounded base of the kettle acts as a heat exchanger making it really efficient.

Often it's a combination of these. For example the McMillan goes 90% of the time and the Arroyo bag probably 75% of the time.

I'm in the process of upgrading all my Big 4.

Tent: Mountain Designs Neutrino 1 (1.4kg) - This is a great tent, and it has proven itself over 4 seasons with no major dramas. I'm in the market for a good 4 season lightweight 2 man tent though.
Sleeping Bag: Mont Zodiac 700 (1.5kg) - I just bought a SeaToSummit Alpine II today which is much warmer and weighs 1.3kg.
Sleeping Mat: Mountain Designs Pro Series 3.8 Small (500g) - I'm hoping to order a ThermaRest Neo All-Season later this year.
Pack: Wilderness Equipment Breakout 75L (2.9kg) - This bag kills me around the hips, I am far too skinny for it. I have found the One Planet McMillan fits well and have used One Planet before, so the McMillan will be my next buy.

[Also have Bushcrasher 700 gm but don't use it much now as not keen on harness, but have done trips like 5 days Hinchinbrook Thorsborne Trail with it.]
Pad: Neo Air or 3/4 Thermarest

My gear is good for tropics, not sure if usable down south though in winter. I would need to look at wet weather gear and cold stuff if down south I guess which would change pack size required. But when I did Overland Track last Xmas with TasEx, the pack they supplied was WE Breakout - same as mine !!!

The Golite Jam pack is 50 liters and is just a smaller Pinnacle.

A $1000 for all of that gear is not that much really, try pricing traditional bushwalking gear, you can pay up to $600 for a pack alone or up to $900 for a tent, a good quality sleeping bag can be $700 plus.

But at 50 litres the jam is 930 g compared the the 72 Litre Pinnacle at 875 g, I just don't get that, a 50 litre is so much heavier than a 72 litre pack, IS the Pinnacle just made of extra light weight material ?????

I think I know the problem, Golite website just shows one weight, probably the heaviest pack version, does not show, the medium or light figures, which is not very helpful, not sure why they don't or am I missing it ??

Been googleing and it seems the light version is 600 grams or so.

John, I once owned a GoLite Speed - relatively comfortable but at around 1kg but built of quite light fabric. You could see a 500g pack struggling under the weight of so many straps and additional bits and pieces that it was morbidly obese.

When you analyse where the weight is in a pack you will find it is in all the extras - buckles, straps etc. I am in the middle of building a pack of about 35 litres capacity out of Dyneema grid stop so I have put some effort into analysing where the weight is. A simple pack such as my SMD Swift uses about 1 sq metre of outer weight fabric - In my case the Dyneema weighs about 150g/sq m, and add 1/2 sq m of lighter fabric say 70gsm - a total of 220g. 1000d cordura would blow this out to 400g/sq m. even doubling this for pockets etc doesn't explain the weight of a 2.5kg pack So it must be in the frame, padding, shoulder straps, hip belts and the endless buckles and straps that blight the exterior of so many commercial packs. The Swift which is a remarkably simple pack weighs 430g (with about 220g of fabric) +130g for the frame + 120g for the hip belt with pockets.
